A variety of sources going back to Olson essentially say that a driver in a square box should not be placed equidistant from all the sides unless you want significant variations in response. These sources suggest things like using various rules or proportions generally to place the tweeter (or top-most driver) closer to either the top edge or the sides. If you look at most speakers the tweeter is closer to the top edge than the side edges, usually by a ratio of between 1:1.2 and 1:1.6. If you look at the attached image this seems to would hold true for the Revel PerformaBe M126Be if you just look at the brown cabinet, but then they've added the black part. With a little "on screen measuring" it seems like the black part keeps the top edge of the cabinet mostly equidistant to the tweeter compared to the sides. This speaker may be an exception because of the use of Revel's shallow waveguide, but is there something else going on here? Is there really that much of a difference with tweeter placement in these small boxes? This speaker does generally measure very well, although the vertical contour plot is typically messy for a 2-way (from Erin's review):
