Is baffle shape really important? What about these ideas?

I will rephrase my question and I am not trying to be confrontational.
Are in-wall speakers inherently better than enclosed boxes even with same back box.
It depends on what you want to achieve. Sound emitted in a 2pi and 4pi space propagates differently. I don’t think they are directly comparable.

I think you meant to say, "Yes, as long as the crossover is redesigned to remove any baffle step compensation present."
Correct. Although generally the designer knows the application. Certainly, true for in-wall studio monitors. I guess somebody might get creative at home with normal speakers.

I assume Genelec has the means to adjust baffle step.
8341A flush mounting box is designed to avoid reflection from the wall behind the speaker. Benefits are the lack of cancellation dips caused by rear wall reflection and increased bass level due to the 2 pi radiation space. The increase in bass level can be compensated by GLM without changing the increased SPL capability.

In theory, yes, practically, no, only because most in-wall speakers available for sale aren't that great, but if I was designing a listening room from scratch I would absolutely start with baffle mounted speakers

What are the common flaws? I would guess that the room size and geometry would be the biggest impediment, no?

Sarumbear just showed us a Genelec, but it's true most people don't think of in-wall for their homes. With DIY it would be as easy as otherwise.

I think most people don't want the back of speakers hanging into the next room.

Are saying need for back box is the issue?

Sure. How do you make a speaker only what, maybe 5" deep without screwing it up?
Wouldn't that apply only to LF drivers that are supposedly nondirectional .

That's true, but I'm not sure what you mean. How do you keep the woofer back wave from reflecting from the back wall of the cabinet and going out the cone?

I meant that the sub has more placement options, so in-walls with a sub. 16" spaced studs allow for a large short throw surface also.

How do you get the requisite box volume? Unless you mean the infinite baffle drivers with 0.707 Qts. That is sometimes done, but you need a convenient room behind them.
