Have just bought 5K installed app on I phone 13, works via that , tried to connect to my Astell and Kearn A70 mk 2 via usb C to micro usb cable. the A&K just closes down and restarts, also won't connect over Bluetooth, checked cable it connects to a laptop fine, and shows files, so cable is data, 5k is connected to i phone by usb, 5k is set to prioritise usb in app, so what is going on. Thanks for replies in advance.

Chris. Edit, the A70 connects just fine to my Topping NX4 via micro usb to micro usb, now have connected to Bluetooth which is APTX HD But USB will just not work, also tried second C to Micro USB cable just in case

Have you managed to connect any USB-C DAC to the A&K? Maybe it just doesn't support USB-C?

In any case, I would try using a Micro USB OTG adapter, combined with a USB-A to USB-C cable.

Thanks for reply staticV3, no i haven't, only had it connected micro usb to micro usb, to a topping NX4 which works fine, think you could be right, their is obviously a serious issue, as it causes the A70 to shut down and restart, the OTG adapter is well worth a try for the little outlay it would cost, unfortunately, i don't have one to hand.

Thanks Chris

Quick update found an adapter lead, micro usb to A socket, but it may not be OTG, don't actually know the differenc, but the A70 2 dosen't shut down and restart any more, instead i get a message, the external device connected to usb is not recognised, so the problem is definately in this area will update when OTG adapter arrives

Chris

Update, OTG A socket to micro USB adapter arrived, unfortunately exactly the same. get the message. the external device connected to USB is not recognised, anybody have any further thoughts, the AK connects to my Topping NX4 instantly.

Have you read "How to Use USB Audio" on page 35 in the manual?

It may be related to the cable length in player mode with OTG.
I have already noticed this behavior with several DAPs, including my Fiio M15. While in DAC mode, e.g. on the PC, 70cm or 100cm cable lengths are no problem, in player mode with OTG cable or OTG adapter it can only be a maximum of 10-20cm.
With Pioneer players, for example, 80cm cable length was no problem.

Of course, it could also be that it is incompatible, you can only test it with a short cable or adapter. For the cable from the NX4 you could try an adapter.

Thanks Roland, with your suggestions in mind have ordered an actual OTG cable micro usb plug one end, usb c the other end, which is 30cm long, see attachment, is that likely to solve the issue, if that is the problem.

I hope you have taken the cable orientation into account. I seemed to only sometimes be able to connect my dongle DACs to my phone. It drove me nuts until I noticed weird arrow connections on the cable that came with the DAC. Then I remembered that USBC cable has dedicated pins for USB 2.0 and most cables only connect one side - so the “C” side will only work in one orientation (well I had C on both sides, so only 1/4 chance of a random choice working).

Also probably stating the obvious, have you disabled charging from host on the 5K? It may be drawing power that the AK not able to provide, causing it to shut down.

Oh dear my brains hurting now, if the latest cable i have ordered dose'nt do the trick, i think it might be time to give up. how do you disable charging on the 5K.

Chris

Ok so the short OTG USB C to micro USB cable didn't work, i dug out an old android phone today a Huawei P smart from 2019, as it has a micro USB socket, guess what , i can't get that to connect, no way no how USB to the 5K, put some music on an sd card as it has a slot, stuck Hiby music app on it, cos it's free, went into developer settings and told it to pass files, not charge only, did all USB settings in Hiby and nothing, the only device that will connect to this damn 5K is my i phone 13 using a camera connector, the android phone works over Bluetooth, at APTX HD same as A70, time to give up, is it just this 5K thats problematic, with connecting via micro USB, or will they all do it. fed up with it now.

You've not set it to Bluetooth only /charge only on USB have you?

Have you tried using it as a USB DAC on a regular PC or Mac?

The left button should light up red when there is a USB DAC connection, otherwise it is not in that mode.

Yes the 5 K does that, when you attempt to connect to A70 dap the red light on 5k flashes, but the A70 then says USB device not recognised, with OTG adapter and A to C cable, with Micro USB to C OTG cable inc one that is very short, the A70 shuts down and reboots itself. haven't tried on a win PC will try that today.

Chris

Ok had a go today with a win 11 laptop, that has USB C inputs, with both the phone with micro USB and the A 70, no luck, i tried every cable i have, which is a lot, just about to give up, when i found a USB C to USB A OTG adapter the other way arround, then found a USB A to micro USB data cable, success both the A70 and the phone connected to the laptop, and i was able to play music from their SD cards on the laptop, so cracked it i thought, unfortunately not, this cable combination will not allow A70 or phone to connect to the 5k, i am beginning to think it isn't possible.
