When I heard and saw the news of the fire (still going?), my heart ached and my deepest sympathy.

During 2013 - 2018, I was staying in Research Triangle area near La Jolla, northern San Diego, and I visited LA including the presently fired areas several times driving my car. Really beautiful places and nice people...

Thanks. San Gabriel Valley was my home for most of my life. I only recently moved to Idaho. Seeing Altadena leveled is surreal. I spent decades biking through that area. So thankful my sister and her family are safe. But seeing that beautiful area destroyed and families homeless is heartbreaking.

EDIT: And I think the winds have calmed and the major damage is done. Some spot-fires, but there’s really nothing left to burn at this point.

1889 Harvard set up a 13 inch lens photographic refractory telescope on Mount Wilson (near the recent Altadena, Cal. fire). It took a month to wrangle the telescopes 3,700 pound assemblage up there. In use until 1890 it photographed some unknown stars among 1,150.
