Mesanovic CDM65 love?

They were one of my favorites when I listened to a bunch of speakers last December. I was looking for something bigger but I listened out of curiosity. Very good.
Meant to respond to this. What else were you listening to at the time?

Among other things...
- PMC 6-2
- PSI A25
- Neumann KH420
- ATC SCM50ASL Pro
- Genelec 8361A
- Dutch and Dutch 8C
- Kii Three

They were most similar to the DD8C, but with less low end and much less power on tap.

Yeah, that sounds about right. I’m excited to get my pair soon, hopefully within the next two weeks.

The Mesanovics are, as far as I know, the most “affordable” cardioid speaker that also measures really well. We shall see what happens if/when Kali releases their cardioid speaker, or if DD release a smaller product.

I think i can tell you why they fly so much under the radar. I myself would not have considered or appreciated the cardioid design (and overall performance) of the mesanovic before i heard something similar. That is besides the brand awareness thing (if Neumann brought out something like these people would buy them...)

What do we know about it, and where have they spoken of it?

Pretty much “I’ll wait until Kali makes a cardioid speaker”. Sorry, I don’t know much more.
I am among the idiots saying this. There is zero evidence that Kali will introduce such a speaker to my knowledge. It's more like, it would be cool if they did, and it fits their pattern of imitating the technology in more sophisticated monitors (the waveguides, the coaxial, now the professional coaxial)

There is a very strong possibility that given Kali's brand positioning they never make a speaker this intrinsically costly.

In theory Kali could make a large waveguide speaker or a floorstanding main monitor as well but considering their last two products are a professional networked coaxial monitor and a tiny desk system I would not hold my breath.

The Mesanovic CDM65’s are in and set up! They sound awesome, and are pretty much the solution I needed for my space. However, a few “small” issues.

1) Because of space constraints, my listening position is maybe a bit more than 2.5’ away from them. But even in that position, it measures pretty flat.

2) Because I’m as close as I am, the inherent noise and hiss of the speaker is, unfortunately, pretty audible. It obviously disappears the moment I play anything, so it’s not a major deal, but it is there. I imagine that it would be a non-issue at greater distances.

I’d say they’re worth the hype, considering that they’re, as far as I know, the most “economical”, high quality entry into cardioid speakers. I certainly look forward to working on them for a good long while.

Oops. About 0.8 m is quite nearfield indeed, and self-noise is neither specified nor mentioned in any reviews I've seen. Have you tried turning down sensitivity on the back panel to see whether that helps?

If it should turn out to be too much of a bother, you may be forced to downgrade to, say, some Genelec Ones (8341A or the like).

Yeah, I’ve turned them to -6 right from the get go. It’s still audible, unfortunately. I am curious if it’s because of how they’re currently powered. Gonna experiment with that.

I don’t mind. I prefer the cardioid dispersion via DSP. Opens up possibilities for the future!

UPDATE - turns out that some noise is inherent to the speakers, as confirmed by Mesanovic.

TO CLARIFY, this is not truly an issue. The moment I move further away, the noise virtually disappears. I can only hear it because I’m sitting so close to them, closer than what is recommended.

They still sound amazing, and have already proven to be a very useful and worthwhile upgrade to the studio.
