Linus Tech Tips just released (2 hrs ago):

They used parts from aliexpress.

ChatGPT 3.5 (the free one), summary:
In this video, Linus Tech Tips and his team attempt to build headphones from scratch using components sourced from AliExpress. They collaborate with Dank Pods, and each team builds a pair of headphones using the provided plans from Capra Audio but deviates from the instructions. The challenge includes using various AliExpress components, including drivers, soldering irons, and 3D-printed parts. The goal is to create a unique pair of headphones that will be judged by Dank Pods.

Throughout the process, both Linus and Dank Pods share banter and discuss their strategies, with Linus admitting that he may have an advantage due to his prior experience with such projects. The teams face challenges such as selecting drivers, 3D-printing parts, soldering, and making ear cushions creatively. Linus expresses concern about the quality of his build compared to Dank Pods.

After completing their respective headphones, Linus and Dank Pods present them to Dank Pods for blindfolded testing. Dank Pods provides feedback on the sound quality, comfort, and aesthetics of the headphones without knowing who built which pair. Linus attempts to distinguish his headphones by modifying them during the blindfolded test.

Ultimately, Dank Pods reveals his thoughts on both pairs, highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of each. Linus and his team reflect on the experience, with Dank Pods praising Linus for the aesthetics of his headphones but critiquing the sound quality. The video ends with a sponsorship message for Throne, a platform for online gift exchanges.

Overall, the video combines humor, competition, and collaboration, showcasing the challenges and creativity involved in building headphones from scratch using AliExpress components.

I just don’t enjoy listening to Linus when it comes to audio stuff.
Especially after being the subject of THE BEST AUDIO YOUTUBE VIDEO IN HISTORY: if you haven’t watched this I HIGHLY recommend it:
This is a commentary video from the Scientific Audiophile on Youtube. He mostly has good takes (actually lots of satirical ones).

Looking at the FR graphs, they look marginally worse than Meze 99.

I don't know anything about Linus, never watched any of his videos, but those don't look bad for first attempts!

I only watched the few mins of above video where they showed the drivers. I would have recommended they buy drivers with measured frequency response. You can get some by Ole Wolff and Tymphany. Latter is more expensive but former cost only a few $ so same ballpark as what they spent. (they are also packaged properly, not just loose in a bag, where they will stick to each other and probably damage the membrane).

As I said, didn't watch any more but guessing from the big 100Hz humps that they didn't try closing up any holes on the rear of the drivers. Just doing this might do enough to bring it down to sensible levels. Or trying different pads, guessing they are very tightly sealing pleather from the graph. Given the ownership of a 5128 would have been more educational / interesting to actually use it to experiment with these things rather than make a 20min video of just putting the parts together.

Actually they look as better candidate for menagable EQ-ing, somehow the descending highs slope is almost on target tho under the level. I don't have time to listen to that rent and considering what people (designers) are achieving with cheap IEM's this is absolutely not worth either time or attention.

For those who might not watched the video and might be under the impression that they are developing headphones - they are not. They are playing around with DankPods.
