My Hsu tubes are the 1220s (but I've seen ads for the taller ones you had).
They were one of his original products. They worked excellent but had a very poor wife acceptance factor, he was sad to find out. LOL
Here's my ebay sale picture from 2010 :)

Enough to give housecats vertigo.... unless they are into free solo.

I believe Dr. Hsu wrote about a trick he had of stacking a pair of his tubes end-to-end after remounting/rewiring one of the drivers. He may have claimed greatly increased output with lower distortion. Just the ticket if you have a 14-foot ceiling!

Hi all David here

I think my first memory of audio equipment was picking up a Kenwood catalog at the Japanese Dept Store in Hawaii. They had a bunch of gear and my dad picked up a whole system for the house he just bought. Then when I was 15 I installed a Rockford Fosgate 12" in a ported box in the trunk of my Accord along with a Coustic Power amp. Fun times!

I haven't ever had the luxury of my own listening room so always listened a lot while commuting, whether on headphones or in my car. I still dream of having a dedicated library / music room but until then Personal Fi it is. I also love to bedroom DJ so Pro Equipment is also interesting.

In any case, I've always been a bit swayed by the flower marketing language or reviews. Perhaps more for the prose rather than that actual product. But coming across ASR I've been trying to find more of a balance. I'm an IT Professional and so the technical side is super interesting to me. Admittedly the level of knowledge on this board is multiple levels above my understanding but I believe people be fairly open in terms of sharing and patience for those with less knowledge and experience.

Anyways I'll be seeing you in the comments.

David

Hello there,, feels kinda rude to just register and immediately post stuff before introductions...
My name's Francis and why I don't just use it in the internet I'll never know. I discovered ASR just a couple of months ago while looking up reviews on DAC's and amps and just joined today!

I somehow missed the intro round when I joined and started posting. I guess I was too excited about all these great threads...
My father got me interested in HiFi when I was 8, that is roughly 50 years ago, and he was generous in helping me with equipment. Soon I had a Dual player with a magnetic system (!) feeding Canton LE600s via a Grundig receiver. An Uher 4400 taught me that 0.15% wow&flutter (DIN) are audible. Direct-to-disc sounded so superb, my Grundig would do simulated Quadro which sounded great in the early 70‘s. The industry was desperately looking for a decent recording media, friends were listening to pre-recorded 38cm/s tapes on an Revox machine, PCM mastered metal cuts were for the less fortunates.
And then came the CD. A bit a spoiler as all the cover art went away. My interest turned to video and I collected Laserdiscs. Loved the multichannel 5.1 part and was totally absorbed seeing a high quality video production like Quincy Jone’s & Frank Sinatra‘s LA is my Lady. After I bought my first DVD player in 96, I collected multichannel DVDs and upgraded to a projector and 6 identical boxes, culminating in a Blu-ray with a concert in 3D on with 6x48/24. That was heaven, but the industry did not follow. I added a Mch Dirac box but am back to streaming now, having spread 6 Raspis with various DACs across two places, feeding them with Roon, my CDs and Qobuz. Occasionally I search for Multichannel in Qobuz and count to 10 or so. And then I watch Apollo 11 to check on another gone technology.

Good to hear from another multich enthusiast.. Unfortunately Qobuz hasn't expanded on their initial 5.1 offerings not withstanding a lot of encouragement by many. But I believe the biggest impedance is the now current interest in Atmos encoded files. Amazon and Tidal are now offering some Atmos and looking into the new Sony 3D system as well. Sadly there exist a number of issues with needing proprietary gear to make it work and other BS. We multich guys remain frustrated over the constant format and encoding wars that rear their ugly heads every time multich begins to gain public interest and demand.
But limited amounts of DVD, SACD, and Blu Ray music continues to be released. Get together with the guys over at https://www.quadraphonicquad.com/forums/
for a start to follow the current action.

... Qobuz is not so much to blame, but places like Quello Concerts, that do stream many good music dvds, but only in two channel, not even good old Dolby. What a waste.
I watch Atmos closely and agree that it could re-infuse Mch. For me, I could live with the Mch base stream without objects and hope for a cracked decoder that would allow stripping that from the Atmos stream.
Thanks for the link.

IIRC, Atmos files are backward compatible and will fall back to a DD 5.1 base if decoding isn't available.
I could be wrong, I often am. ;)
