DEQX Premate 8 digital active crossover / DSP

Thanks for the info. When you say 1700 taps per side, I take that as input channels? What sample rate are you using?

Michael
I meant per speaker. So two 1700-tap filters, one on the right speaker, and another on the left. Running at 192k.

Anybody on his thread a beta user of the Pre -8? I got mine last week. 2 things I can figure out, unsure of the possibility, trying to use my preamp in front of the Deqx, and if it’s possible to use REW to measure after Deqx does its thing.

You can measure it with an ADC

I would be cautious about using a preamp upstream of the DEQX. You might clip its inputs. If you want to use a preamp, you should use it for component switching only and let DEQX do volume control.

Old versions of DEQX had dip switches inside the unit (not documented in the manual!) that allowed you to adjust input sensitivity and output gain. You should check the manual and maybe look for dip switches inside. If you see dip switches, contact the manufacturer and ask them what it's for and how to adjust.

I am pretty sure you would be able to use REW to measure. It's a matter of figuring out how you are going to get digital output from your PC into the DEQX.

FWIW: I owned an old version of DEQX. I do not own the current version. In my old version, connecting the laptop to the DEQX made it show up in Windows as a sound output and input device (microphone). Assign the outputs appropriately in REW and off you go.

Any progress on the users of the new DEQX ?
Mine arrived a couple of weeks ago, but I didn't have time to start fiddling with it until last week. Took a speaker outside this afternoon and got the pair of them working this evening. Excellent clarity, but these are new speakers so it's too early to say more than that. The Pre-8 hardware seems well made, but the software needs work. . . lots of frustration at the moment.

Okey many Thanks for your reply .
Mine is ordered as wel but I’am in batch 3.
So patience is on its place on the Good side there is Some new software on its way hopefully mine is already privide with it.
But I understand that the sound quality is no dissapointmend at first ?

I've no doubt that when they've got the form and function of the software right, this will be a great product.

My shipment came with no instructions. None. Not even a hint. If you scratch around in the Help Centre part of the website, you'll find some customer service docs. Look in there are you'll find a Getting Started Guide. That's it.

Thats perhaps the countersite of a small company .
No time to do everything right ;-)
But i must say , I ecpected this .

My experience with DEQX is from quite some time ago when I was trialling a piece of their kit. I found their service to be superb, some of the best I’ve experienced.
Maybe just reach out to them directly.

I have full confidence that everything will turn out fine after the start-up phase

I enquired about Gen 4 late 2021 when it was first announced, was told early 2022. Nothing eventuated so I looked elsewhere. Even if I was buying now, the user feedback about the software is a big concern. Hoprfully it matures soon.
Its a very long start up phase, and current users are essentially involved in development.

I did scratch around a bit and found a user manual that covers their older models, but not the new one. I was curious to see what the new software offers. I could not find any info about it. Does the "getting started" guide have info on their new model?

In case anyone is interested I now have a DEQX HDP-4 in black for sale. Very good condition.

Comes with all accessories (calibrated mic/cable, remote, original box etc).

I was interested in the new models (the pre-4) but after seeing the price of its bigger brother, the massive delay in the rollout etc and after putting Camilla DSP through its paces, Camilla wins.

PM me with a $$$ offer and we can take it from there.

Thanks,

Peter

I got my Pre-8 a few weeks ago with their 1.35 software. It has a release note (with a list of some known issues) and a reasonable doc. The doc includes various very useful videos. I had some help doing my first calibration and have done a couple unaided. 1.35 includes the parametric EQ ability and using previous experience I've set up eight EQs to get pretty good sound (I use the three coax outs into my own dacs). I'm sure that it'll work out well. I'm used to the current user interface but it's an area they are rewriting.

Is the automated FIR crossover working?

Yes, everything is automatic. I chirp the three drivers from relatively close by (e.g. 6, 12, or 18 inches). I then decide on the crossover frequencies (I knew those in advance) and name that as a speaker). I then move the mic away from the speaker to somewhere between the speaker and the sitting position and chirp again for the software to estimate relative distances (I can set the distances myself if I want to rather than use what the software estimated). If I wanted to I could do the same for the other channel. Finally I can move the mic to near the seating position and rechirp both channels and see a graph (I'm not sure that the graphs are particularly accurate but the basics are working automatically). In my largeish room with lots of absorption and large speakers I need to do lots of EQ.

Sounds good!
How about the sound? Does it sound good (what does pretty good mean in this case?)?

I'm convinced that with a good calibration of each driver and correct distance settings it'll be good. I can see no point in me trying different combinations until I have a final software release (or at least the next software release). The only thing I can compare it to is the calibration of my HDP-5 done by Alan of DEQX a few years ago. Once Alan had done the calibration I could alter driver levels (within 0.5db and set up parametric EQs) It took a serious amount of trial and error before I got great sound. The Pre-8 allows driver levels to be set by 0.1 alteration (a definite improvement). As I said my speakers and room absorption are unusual so a lot of EQ is necessary (and level changes). Because I have so much experience of playing with driver level (you'd hope that wouldn't need to be altered, maybe at some stage I'll find that just EQ is needed) and EQ it only took about four decent listening sessions to get a good overall sound but I'm sure it will be better, eventually. I've configured my hardware such that I can input the digital audio to both the HDP-5 and the Pre-8 and from the HDP-5 convert to optical and use coax out from the Pre-8 direct to the dacs and using the dacs' remote dynamically switch between the optical input or the coax input to the three dacs. It's astonishing how one's brain hears dramatic differences when you swap mid track such that it takes several seconds for the brain to accustomise itself to the sound. I'm not just after good sound, I'm after exceptional sound which mu room and kit are capable of.
