With the sound of headphones being very dependent on the fit - yes, some "burn-in" while the pads mold to your head shape, but anything else is totally irrelevant.
So playing music through them is useless. It is the pressure on them that alters the sound. Could just pump the pads 20 times when new.

Yeah, it's a total myth. A placebo effect. I attached an actual test and an article saying how notorious 701s are. Yeah, well the test shows virtually no difference after 120 hours.
Do they "mature" over time? No more than some people, apparently. If they sound "lifeless" straight out of the box, it just means someone isn't used to the sound yet.
