Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro Review (headphone)

Are the 990s good? I keep seeing mixed feedback about them, some saying they’re great and others not. This guy towards the end of this video says they measure well:

They very clearly don't:

"I am a professional, not enthusiast INTJ Sigma whale". I wouldn't take what they say that seriously

He is a rabid DT990 fan... acc to this ...ermm ... person ... only the DT990 is worthy.
But needs worn pads ... look what the guy is sporting .... DT990 with fresh pads.
He had registered here numerous times under various different names.
I don't think he can help it....

Not for the enjoyment of music, but if you're doing audio editing, they do a good job of finding hiss, ticks and buzzes because they are exaggerated in those frequencies. If that's the case, there are actually $20 earclips that only have high frequencies that can be used as well for that purpose.

Lower the 'warmth' and lower the treble peak and the DT990 sound good.
Most people find them comfortable and spare parts are easy to obtain.

They don't like to be played loud.

I just got these and have listened briefly, but to me they sound good, I don't think they sound bad even though I can see the first post says they don't measure too well. I currently also have Sennheiser HD400 Pros (which are supposedly just 560s although some say they're tuned slightly different) and they both sound fairly similar to me. Also, the 990s are not as bright as I thought they would be given others often say this. I'd agree with others these are bright, but for the most part they're not exceedingly bright. I could understand on some songs they'd sound too bright if the treble is already harsh in that recording, but mostly these seem fine. I think they sound slightly unbalanced towards to the very high frequencies, but not much. The bass is slightly less than I expected but it's not exceedingly low. As it's open back, I guess that's why.

There's some unit variation and the over-brightness might not be too bad on your unit. It's just prudent to be cautious recommending DT990 to others.

Yeah that makes sense. They're certainly bright but not as bright as I thought they'd be. To me they're like slightly brighter Sennheiser HD 560s with slightly less harsh highs. I found the highs on the 560s (400 Pro in my case but basically the same) a tad harsh, even though they're not the brightest headphone out there. I feel the 560s shine really well on some songs but not so much on others.

What I found myself, using Amir's PEQ suggestions, is that they sound great. Indeed, if you look at Amir's post-eq graph (something I wish he'd do more often), and compare that to the Sennheiser HD600/650 pre-EQ graph, they're very similar indeed. And Amir thinks the HD600s sound great, even without EQ.

As for the bass, this was interesting. When Amir talked about 'warbling', I wondered what he meant. Then I turned them up high, and "Ah! Warbling!" But I did find that I could EQ in a bit more bass if I didn't turn the volume up too loud. I suspect my satisfaction vs Amr's dissatisfaction is caused by a combination of two things. Firstly, I listen a bit quieter. Secondly, Amir has a far more finely-tuned ear than I, and I'm guessing he starts to hear problems long before I do.

I may be wrong on some of this, it's just my take on it, based on my personal experience.

I watched one of his videos out of curiosity a year or so ago, I don't think I can possibly bring myself to click on these ones you link, ha - they look scary as well as probably feeling bad for the guy if I watch them!

Yep, that's basically it. Unfortunately some people look at his headphone reviews and think he has knowledge.
