Yes, and Ali Farka is just the tip of the iceberg in that he achieved some recognition in the wider world. There is just so much mindmeltingly brilliant music to come out of Africa since the 1950s that has rarely been heard in the west. But the relationship with American blues is complicated. When Tinariwen first became known outside Africa I seem to remember thay claimed one of their biggest influences was Dire Straits … ;-)Or this great example of the blues influencing African pop
