Your Desktop Audio Setup?

MacBook Pro/MacMini-->MiniDSP SHD Studio --> Genelec 8341A
IMG_4672.jpeg

Here's my new desktop setup. Custom Windows PC -> Monoprice optical cable -> Cambridge CXN v2 -> World's Best Cable Mogami 2549/Neutrik XX Series Gold -> Genelec 8030c on Genelec stands and powered via Tripp Lite surge protector. Replaces a NAD D7050/KEF Q150 setup. I'm repurposing the CXN v2 from my living room, where I replaced it with a new miniDSP Flex and mini-PC streamer.

I'm a strange one that still listens to FM radio (and of course streaming). Problem is finding a station that doesn't overcompress and tweak their Orban compander audio to total silliness. And then provide good *source* audio to go with that, regardless of genre. Heh, no 90's compressed CD "remasters". I'm blessed to have licensed LPFM stations in my area that in addition to streaming, actually CARE about their local off-air listeners quality.

As much as I loved my old vintage analog tuners, these days I'm using SDR receivers that incorporate SiLabs chips. Without getting too radio-nerdy, there is a huge difference.

Latest amp is a Schiit Heresy, plus a Douk U3 for playing around portable with a cellular power bank.

Cans are the AKG K712, which seem to agree with my head pretty well for long-term (multi hours) listening sessions. My test is usually to listen to classical, and check to make sure that woodwind solos don't burn a hole in my brain. If it passes that test, the rest is gravy. :)

So why 2 sets of speakers?

When I was working, I had the Adams on my music desk and the MTMs on my work desk. When I retired earlier this year, I consolidated the two work areas into one. It’s actually been quite useful to have both sets of monitors for mixing/mastering. Though they’re EQ’d to the same target, they both present differently, which has been helpful for checking mixes.

I feel like I asked you this before but it must be a different post, what stands are your A5X on?

Here's what I use, BTW: ALLSOP Monitor Stand. These are a whole lot cheaper if you have the room on your desk.
