The initial approach of the UK government was that the disease would lead to herd immunity until they came to understand that getting herd immunity by people getting the actual disease, as opposed to vaccination which is the normal medical way, would lead to the medical facilities being overwhelmed many times over, if only for a few weeks, and thousands of people dying due to lack of availability of medical treatment.
