Hi folks, I’ve decided my next audio purchase is going to be a mic to measure my in room response.

I do not own a laptop, my iMac lives upstairs and my main system is downstairs so I would like to use a Umik-1 mic with my iPad to measure my system in my living room. Looking at the Mini DSP website this seems pretty straight forward, but I have one question regarding the playback of the test tones.

Would playing test tones via Apple Airplay be detrimental to the measurements? Airplay is lossy and is around 256Kbps AAC, or should I only consider connecting the headphone jack of my iPad to an input on my amp for best results? I’ll need to buy some cabling if this is the only way to go. If Airplay is fine for this it will save me buying a 3.3mm cable.

Appreciate your input, thanks.

I would bring the imac down and use REW.

Too much faff for my liking, I have a portable device which can be used with the mic. I just want to know if playing the test tones would be detrimental via airplay. I don’t see why it would be, but thought it best to check.

I've done what you're trying to do using an iPad and Umik-1. I use Housecurve and use Airplay to send over the sweeps. Works fine. With the caveat that Housecurve has nowhere near the features or power of REW and you'll be limited to 2 channel stereo. But within those limitations and if you just want to see how your stereo system is performing, should work just fine for you.

Yes I’m only looking to measure a 2 channel stereo setup and gain some objective data on how it performs at the listening spot. Something I have never done before.

Depending on what the results show, I may add a Mini DSP to the pre out/main in on my integrated amp in the future.

I've never used Housecurve to generate correction filters, use my laptop and REW for that. But he supports miniDSP. Don't think there's a way to control (get filters into) the miniDSP with the iPad, you'd still need the iMac to do that.

I just want to measure at the moment.

For frequency response it should be fine up to a certain (high) frequency, but I don't think it will be usable for phase response. I would also not use it for THD readings.
