I'm getting older and a few times I've had a random ringing show up in my left ear so It's a bit worrisome, my dad lost hearing in his left ear also. I better hurry up and get my "endgame" speakers. I have wondered if drinking alcohol and being a little too sedantary can make this worse. The funny thing is it had been a while since I even listened to headphones at a good volume.

I drink often and am fairly sedentary at my age and I don't notice anything unusual with my hearing other than a bit of tinnitus from time to time. Some have wondered if it is caused by a hearing mechanism in the ear or in the brain and I have no idea but it's interesting to think about.

It is interesting and parallels hearing voices. Is it a brain injury, cannabis use at a young age or a birth defect. All are plausible and may hint towards tittinus causes too.

Alcohol made my tinnitus unbearable maybe because lack of sleep, so I stopped drinking…
Ive heard several people having the same problem.

I haven't consumed alcohol is appx 20 years and my tinnitus is worse than ever-it is almost constant and will get much worse during stressful times. Very annoying-smoked cannabis but not super young-started at around 22 and stopped around 26 so not sure if there is a connection for me. Mine reared its ugly head after a particularly loud and distorted monitor above my head at The Ryman during a Govt Mule concert annoyed the shit out of me-I noticed the day after and ever day thereafter tinnitus was my new unwelcome friend. If I listen very loud for >10-15 minutes it will increase in volume as well.

I went to my primary doctor last week and have a specialist appointment this friday. Meanwhile I'm posting to figure out what could be the cause.
Time, age, having occupations that subject you to loud noises or signals....you name it. I actually have diagnosed Tinnitus (10% va disability rating) along with hi frequency hearing loss (from what it used to be). I've just learned to live with it.

I have never been a cannabis user and rarely drink. I don't think that's at the root of tinnitus, and certainly not in my case. Perhaps it was loud noises in my youth; perhaps not.

But I think it's one of those maladies that the literature has ignored largely because the people who get it are older and more resigned to the sufferings of advancing age. The current generation of baby boomers have been less willing to accept that situation, and consequently we see greater attention to that and other age-related issues.

Is it insensitive of me to over-simply tinnitus, while watching a medical procedure called "Epiretinal Membrane Peel" which goes deep inside the eyeball to scrape-off film/residue?
Makes cataract-surgery seem like child play.
Okay, I admit it cannot be as simple a procedure as the piano-tuner coming into your house to tweak your piano keys, but...
I am surprised that such complex medical procedures for tinnitus have not been explored and/or devised yet.
Maybe the inner ear difficult to work on is because it's recessed into the skull, and just plain hard to get at.

More likely - the causes of tinnitus are in many cases unknown. So not possible to fix.

That is the exact point that I was trying to make.

I think you mean "not possible to fix because we don't know" << that is an ignorance plea (not yours).
There was a time when "Epiretinal Membrane Peel" was unknown... but became possible to fix!

Could it be that specializing as an otolaryngologist is not as lucrative?

They are fixing tinnitus in many and success rate is pretty good. The waiting list is long as there are not enough practitioners. My musician friend has been waiting for over a year on the waiting list.
