You can set it to max volume or adjust it with the remote or volume wheel.
This is very frustrating, why can't these amps just have an option to select between fixed/variable like the Fiio K11, I'm never confident running an amp with the volume maxed out, just doesn't seem right to me.
I'm referring to the line-out, apparently this doesn't have a fixed line-out, only variable, you have to max out the volume to use it as a 'fixed' line-out, I don't know why topping or SMSL do this.The H400 offers a choice of as many as three (3) fixed output power settings.

Doesn't the FiiO K11 have that option because it's a DAC?This is very frustrating, why can't these amps just have an option to select between fixed/variable like the Fiio K11, I'm never confident running an amp with the volume maxed out, just doesn't seem right to me.
That’s good to know! I would say around $300-400 is my budgetForgot to add, I too use HD800s, HE6 se V2 and HE100se.
The H400 drives all three headphones well.
can I use both xlr to connect the h400 and d400 pro and then use usb to connect to mac? Trying to upgrade form my jds atom and d10 and I think these 2 would be a worthy upgrade. I only used RCA to connect my atom and d10 so I wasn’t sure.The SMSL D400 Pro would be the obvious choice if you wanted a visual match.
You can go Mac -> USB -> D400 -> XLR -> H400.E
