What do you suggest under $300 for a friend who wants to use an old iPod Touch that doesn't have much power?
Closed or open?

"good" bass or flat /rolled off?

If they don't mind smaller cups, closed back, the akg k361/k371 fit the bill.

The emu teak might be a good bet too if the price is right

Koss Porta Pro:

Nice phones but that's what I'd call on-ear, not over-ear.

either

"good"
The k371 then (reviewed on here somewhere). Caveats, small cups and dubious build /reliability anecdotally. But can be had for $150 or less. Get from amazon and can Bbe returned no quibble

I'd look into AKGs - K702 or K712 maybe as they usually have high sensitivity and middle of the road impedance which is not too high or too low. K702 is rated 105db SPL and 62 Ohms for example, and can easily reach 115db SPL with 1V of iPod Touch.

Also, Beyerdynamics might also be a good option - DT900 Pro X for example - 100db SPL efficiency and 42ohms
