Does this card support any true multichannel home theater standard or is it limited to extracting quasi-multichannel from stereo with Dolby Home Theater v4?

Don't remember as I don't use the software that comes with it. But many media players like JRiver and Media Player Classic can do the decoding to PCM and upmixing/downmixing anyway. The Asus software by itself is quite useless because it can't perform proper multi-channel (bass management) DSP system integration. I do all the DSP (time delay, xo EQ and other convolution stuff) in JRiver (purchased). You can probably do the same or get similar results with other free options like Equalizer APO. Or maybe use an external AVR via the PC to HDMI if you have one around.
I tested it, it works, but there is something missing when using optical, I can't change to Full-Range Speakers which nerf the quality, and usually it's not selected on default and I don't know if it is.

It seems to work fine with Linux under Alsa (I disable Pulseaudio), but there is one tweak you need to do to fix a 'Broken Pipe' error. That's Linux for you.
