Primarily? In a house with architectural sound, so rain from the ceiling... Technically, stereo, but not in the same sense as 2 speakers in free space.

Jesus, only 9% of us primarily listen to audio (it’s deliberately called audio not music - right?) on 5.x and larger systems!
I thought this number should be at least 20%
9% is probably at least an order of magnitude more than in the general non-audiophile public.
As I've said before, I have never encountered a multichannel ( i.e. more than 2-channel stereo) system 'in the wild' so to speak. It's simply not a thing around these parts ...

Well, the great Evelyn Glennie famously listens with her feet and stomach ...

Will relegate this to a later poll for how you feel your music. To be done by a qualified Technical Expert. :)

but i'm truly surprised how many people feel need to speak about their system out of the blue. guys, this is a poll, nobody is going to note your audio system descriptions.
In several instances, those descriptions help get the vote placed in the proper category. As I understand it, this data will possibly be used for helping steer content so the site stays as relevant as possible for the users.

mainly milk steaks, but sometimes magnets. rarely ghouls.

on more serious note: poll is great, but i'm truly surprised how many people feel need to speak about their system out of the blue. guys, this is a poll, nobody is going to note your audio system descriptions.

Am not all that surprised as folks like to talk about their systems. When I did market research professionally, would be delighted to get hundreds of responses to a poll. The ancillary posts are a useful bonus for this and followup polls.:)

As it stands with 1,035 Votes. Initial results:

60% = Listen with 2 channel or 2 channel and Sub(s). (25% use a sub with a 2 channel setup. So just shy of half of respondents use a Sub(s))

21% = Listen with Multichannel setups 3.x or more

15% = Listen using Headphones, IEMs, etc.

2.4% = Soundbars, Smart speakers and Other @ 2.4%

Interesting and informative.

car option is missing. primary would be the most time spent listening to music so depending on the work-home life this might change for an individual

Is intentionally missing. It was added, then vetoed and so I also updated the thread question to specify to “at home”.

Seems a better fit for a future mobile poll. Until I realized the different use case, did not know why someone requested headphones separated from IEMs either! Not at home is a whole other market even though there is likely overlap.

With all the people who bought ZERO 2, I thought the Headphones and IEMs category would be at least 50%. Well, Hifimans didn't have a great week so guess it evens out :)

  • mostly 2.1 (everything from streaming, local playback, tv...)
  • 2.0 + headphones on the pc
  • a single s*itty BT "conference" speaker or BT/ANC headphones while at the office (not @home, screw it don't want to edit out my mistakes)

At home, my two Neumann KH 150.
I have headphones and IEMs - I sometimes use them, but just prefer listening to speakers.

I also gotta mention my car. It doesn't have a great audio system, but when I drive to work I spend at least 1h 40 min in it, which is usually most of the time I listen to music on those days.

It's an interesting summary but multichannel with 3.x or more would be 10%, so not sure where your 21% comes from?

And 35% of respondents use a sub, not 50%. But I like how you decided to group some of the categories.

I hope companies like Fosi, Topping, Aiyima and the rest of the crew sees this poll. Having a good implemented SUB-OUT is important to many of us.

I have multiple systems, primarily stereo now (in use), plus some headphone usage on occasion.

Good to see no one has answered soundbar... yet.

Was thinking about this one!

I voted headphones and assuming you mean music then here's what I do:
  • Headphones primarily. WFH/gaming in the study
  • Living/dining area 2.1 HT set-up via the AVR
  • Building/tinkering with computers or cleaning (garage/cars/bike/garden) I'll use bluetooth speakers
  • Wireless earbuds for the gym
  • Public transport or walkabout I'll use my phone with an S9 Pro + IEM

We're the dinosaurs, with our big stereo speakers. Works for me!
Of course, I can speak only for myself -- but I'm a happy dinosaur, tappin' my foot while I listen.
Wait! What's that?!

I just added lines 3,4,5 and 10 into one general group of more than 2 channel. That was my thinking. Not defending the logic of it and open to others interpretations. I said 50% use a sub because they represent approximately 50% of the 2 channel crowd. Again this was just off the top and open to interpretation.

I -- in full and complete disclosure (and I think you know this @fpitas) -- do have and often use a subwoofer.
It's got two drivers and it weighs like 200 lbs and stuff. It's also powered -- and the power is (zut alors) a Class D plate amp... from PartsExpress.

I have no shame.

Umm, I mean, so I am squarely in the 2.x camp vis-a-vis this poll. I think.
