The 25USD 12-pack cheap acoustic panels are the best investment I've made ever. While these panels did not change the frequency response curves, they reduced the overall level of echo by ~3dB, as reported by Genelec's GLM software. Now the imaging of the speakers beats every poor thing I've listened to before. If I listen to any recording of some live performance and close my eyes, it feels much more realistic than before (my partner can confirm that as well so it's probably not some placebo effect).
Such enlightening moment happened some night last week; the next morning I immediately sold off my HD 800 S ... headphones are just way behind in making an immersive experience.
