One weekend I sat down and spent some time listening to the various sound formats found on the Onkyo TX-R70 remote as I cycled through a set of music. These are my general impressions:

•Mono Music – Powerful
•Pure Audio – Ethereal
•Direct - Sharper Vocals
•Stereo – Above but more bass
•Dolby Audio Surround – Cavernous/depth, center channel & surrounds; good for effects.
•DTS Neural X – more distant w/reverb.
•Auro3D – Reverb & more bass.
•Auro Surround – Heavy bass, depth w/distant vocals.
•Dolby Audio Surround THX – Depth w/distant vocals.
•DTS Neural X THX Music – Distant, reverb, side speakers
•Dolby Audio Surround Orchestra – Nice, wide sound w/side speakers.
•Dolby Audio Surround Unplugged – Wide, Clear with natural depth of sound.
•Dolby Audio Surround Studio Mix – Very good, no reverb, good spread.
•All Channel Stereo – very focused, must turn down volume, rear speakers involved.

What did I like the most? Pure Audio (nothing but fronts, no subs) Direct and Stereo and lastly, All Channel Stereo or MCH as it appears on the Onkyo screen. The others can work well with some concert footage or even some recordings.

On the remote below, see the buttons for MOVIE/TV, MUSIC, GAME? The above refers just to the MUSIC button. Enjoy!
