What is it?
It's a speaker!;)

Passive or is that a power cable underneath?
Keith
Looks to be a passive two-way given the twin braided cables.

I wonder if the slot port provides structural damping/bracing like in some designs.

A really excellently measuring inexpensive loudspeaker that would really shake things up.

Looks like a regular fancy power cord to me... (What on earth a ferrite core would do to on a speaker cable, BTW ?)

I'd say active considering the presence of a (silver?) E2X2 between both. The overall design suggests these would be marketed as "studio" monitors, cohesively...

Very deep speaker, not suitable for many desks. But good that they go into this as well.

Pretty interesting. Just based on the look the monitors look promising. With the depth of the cabinet, and what looks to be a pretty thick surround on the midwoofer, I'm expecting relatively impressive bass. Waveguide and rounded baffle, check. No obvious fails in the first photo anyway.

Until the brand show significant improvements in quality control, I won't say that...
Are they that unreliable or is it simply because they sell a lot of units?

They sell a lot of their units to people who complain about broken units on audio forums... which could make the problem seem much worse than it is.

The truth is we have no clear idea of their defect rate or how it relates to other manufacturers. You'd have to know how many were sold, and how many broke. We don't know either of those numbers, we just have a subjective impression of how reliable their stuff is.
