Is new SMSL SU1 defective?

I apologize if this ground has previously been covered but I am severely disappointed so far with my brand new SMSL SU1 so before I start a complaint with an AliExpress reseller I thought I'd check here.

I need the SU1 to work with the optical cable connected to a Chromecast Audio. The CC has worked for years with this cable plugged into an optical port on my amp. However, regardless of the optical source or the cable used the SU1 will not reliably sync and blinks forever. USB works as expected. I don't have a coaxial source.

Just once since I started fussing with this a few hours ago, the DAC synced with the CC. But then it started blinking again.

Process of elimination leads me to believe the optical connection on the SU1 is flaky and I should return it?

I tried the optical input a few times and it worked for me (Bluesound Vault and Hisense TV).
Did you try a good source, like CD player?
Maybe your input is broken, dust?
