PC spdif is not what awds is feeding to the Genelecs -
PC SPDIF out to HOSA AES out to Genelec
The Hosa CDL-313 fully converts a consumer S/PDIF signal to AES3 standard. This includes signal gain, impedance, and ground isolation, and although I have not seen the internals of the Hosa converter, the S/PDIF signal is almost certainly being regenerated, too. Higher end S/PDIF receiver chips incorporate this feature.

performs the task in the technically correct fashion ...
If you don't mind spending the money, this is a worthwhile tool to have.
