Mac mini -> Arcam irDAC -> Roksan integrated amp -> pre-amp out -> sub

do measurements at your listening level and i will have a look at them if you want.

I use Equalizer APO on Windows, I have no idea how you can apply filters on mac.

That would be great. In time I’m willing to invest in an eq solution at amplifier level so that all sources benefit from it (TV, Blu ray). I’m open for recommendations. But for the time being I’m experimenting at the level of my Mac from which I stream mainly music.

I will post measurements in the upcoming days, once I’m confident enough about my listening and speaker positions.

I recommend this:

https://www.minidsp.com/products/dirac-series/ddrc-24

or this if you're fancy:

https://www.minidsp.com/products/streaming-hd-series/shd

they would both remove the need for a DAC and Pre-amp.

Stereo only (2.2), if you're doing or planning to do multichannel then i have other recommendations.

Thanks for your suggestions! Indeed my aim is 2.2 stereo only. The SHD is hard to get in EU for a reasonable price unfortunately. Would this be on par with the SHD, as an alternative: https://nadelectronics.com/nl/product/c-658-bluos-streaming-dac/

It’s similar price overhere as SHD but it offers more digital inputs which I’d prefer.

so here we go. I managed to flatten the peak around 36Hz by lowering my subs lowpass to 30Hz. I have to say I’m very tempted to buy the SHD and go all-in :)

I am also about to do my first measurements and trying to setup everything.
I may open a new thread when I have my own measurements.
But I wanted to ask about an 'issue' I face with windows sound settings as it seems that setting Umik-1 to 0db. is impossible

Levels go up and down in 0,3 steps.
So my options are -0.2 or +0.1.
Is this something expected?
What shall I prefer? -0.2 or +0.1?

Thanks

@Smidge. If you do want to test out equalizations before doing miniDSP or the like, Soundforge on the Mac Mini is pretty great. It allows you to run equalizers and the like and apply it to all sound on the computer.

This is the same test measurement but now with 1/24 smoothing:

Do I need to be concerned about not getting above -20db SPL headroom? How could I improve this?

it seems my room acoustics could use some help around 36 Hz and 120 Hz.

Different smoothing is used for different purposes.
See here: https://www.roomeqwizard.com/help/help_en-GB/html/graph.html

  • Variable smoothing is recommended for responses that are to be equalised.
  • Psychoacoustic smoothing uses 1/3 octave below 100Hz, 1/6 octave above 1 kHz and varies from 1/3 octave to 1/6 octave between 100 Hz and 1 kHz. It also applies more weighting to peaks by using a cubic mean (cube root of the average of the cubed values) to produce a plot that more closely corresponds to the perceived frequency response.
