New to distribution amps and wondering if I can use the Extron MLS 406MA Switcher as the preamp for my Extron XPA 2003C? If so, how should I connect the two, via the line out or preamp out on the "switcher". My intended use is very non-critical, casual listening through a pair of MMG's in my 22x20 art studio space. See attached and thanks for your help!

My guess is the preamp output level is set by the volume control,
but it could be the line out.

I suggest you start by trying this wiring.

I'm not sure that's right. It looks like a balanced connection, with a positive, negative and a ground for each channel.

Although it looks as though you can use it single ended:

Thanks so much for the manuals and advice! Would it be easier just to get a "regular" preamp rather than using this switcher?

"I suggest you start by trying this wiring"

If the source is single ended, you can use the provided diagram, but also tie the minus legs to ground.
Thanks, yes the source will be a single ended cd/dvd player so I'll follow the diagram for tying in.

A few comments:

Balanced signals do not need a ground. Ground is used for the
cable shield. Sometimes the ground is lifted to prevent hum.
In this case there is a line level signal over limited distance.
I would not be concerned about using a shielded cable.

DO NOT SHORT plus or minus to each other or either one to ground.

In this picture the "source" is the upper box. The destination is
the amplifier in the lower box.

The audio into the upper box uses unbalanced RCA cables for left
and right channels. This does not determine the output wiring.
Just plug in.

This is pretty much it. Unbalanced preamp out to balanced in on amp. If in fact your preamp is balanced out then by all means hook it up full balanced in to out.
