emotional female vocals

So... as I reflect on this thread... I find myself thinking that Annie Lennox belongs in here somewhere. Somehow.
She's cool and ... not so cool, almost at the same time. Certainly, sometimes, from one note to the next.
She's not one of my big faves, but I have tremendous admiration for her.

Let's just kind of drop a coupla Annie Lennox YTs here.
YMMV, of course.

Train in Vain (I know lots of folks ain't crazy about her cover -- but it works pretty well for me):

... and Alanis hasn't been mentioned, has she?
OK, now she has. ;)

... and Nina Simone

Not all emotions are so overtly... emotional.

You can pick your favorite female vocal version of this Richard Thompson song (e.g., perhaps Bonnie Raitt) but I pick this one...

another not-so-emotional, but very emotional song: Patty Larkin's I Told Him that my Dog Wouldn't Run

and howzabout Bonnie Raitt covering John Prine's Angel from Montgomery?

These both often make me cry when I listen to them.

This is another tough one, from Emmylou Harris' excellent album Red Dirt Girl.
The whole album is a gut punch (i.e., listen to it, but not if you're feeling too bleak ;))

Try this one for starters:

Emotional classic:
Anything (from the old stuff) by Adele and Amy Winehouse.

Emotional but very tricky (outdoor?) recording for your soundsystem:
Feist - The Park
(if that one sounds good, your system is not a bad one)
The whole Reminder Album is a good one for me.

EDIT:
Anything by Dominique Fils-Aimé.

A long time ago, our high school drama department was excellent. I was the sound engineer, of course. We did a production of the play the Death of Bessie Smith by Edward Albee. The play is fiction. We were invited to produce it out in the local network TV station studios. So like any production we did many takes. One of the works we used as soundtrack was Dinah Washington's This Bitter Earth. So it imprinted on me.

I would also say Experiment IV by Kate Bush and Nina Hagen 99 Luftballons have associations for me.

Brilliant video Experiment IV.

Hagen is still performing. The song still resonates with Germans.

I think emotion comes from individual associations and the age of first hearing.

Many of Melissa Etheridge's songs dig pretty deep, and her emotional investment is readily apparent in her recordings.

Well a good start is to remove any music engineered with auto tune and go from there .

This one always hits me - I'm not a massive fan of bonamassa , Beth hart or the production (horribly compressed drums) , but I can get past all that .. give it a go - it's a LONGGGGG track .

I'd also add anything at all by Billie Holiday, just anything . Sublime
