Well he did pay attention to matching levels. However, his preamp has only .5 db steps. So some DACs could be up to .25 db different which is getting to be a bit much.

Also, if he numbered them and played different numbered players that is a bit of a flaw. You could set up 8 machines and ever only play one while telling listeners they were hearing different ones, and people will think one sounds different from another and then carry that on through the rest of the test.

Then it sounds like it was probably single blind which means he could have influenced the listeners.

One more thing is he said he had to adjust levels between them using them as transports which shouldn't have been needed. Perhaps I misunderstood what went on there.

I wouldn't argue with his conclusion that as transports the sound of the DAC is all that matters. It would be nice to have a chart of how the comparisons went. Doesn't sound like anyone thought they were hearing large differences from his description.
