Cat News?

sorry - dislike being my reaction to the random cat abuse.
Goes without saying.

Yeah, some rotten people out there. Luckily it seems we have more good ones in sum.

this is distressing , some sicko in the bournemouth area for last few no years has been snipping cats , only this one recent august , and still the cat hater air rifle shooter hasn't been caught
We have a local that is poisoning cats. We know who he is but SPCA can not do anything about it without proof. Luckily the man is in his late 80s and will soon take his hatred with him to the grave.

Don't want to dwell on evil, but my first feral 'conversion' Little Boy (a tuxedo) had a weird bump on his back/side, which at first I thought might be a chip.
My vet said, nope, and since it seemed to 'move around' a bit over time, she wanted to find out. So, post surgery she came up to me and dropped a (very rusty) BB in my hand. Kind of explains why LB is still - after, what 6 years? - very very cautious around strangers, and still 'checks' with me ("is it YOU?") before approaching. But of course, then he's also a huge cuddler - so a combo of 'stranger danger fright' vs 'wanna hug?" - poor kid is conflicted, but deals with it remarkably well.

Yes, I have other cat capture friends who have been using the 'old cooler', 'insulated cage' , or 'plastic tub' solutions -all, for the most part, effective and cheap.
In my experience, at least - ferals seem to 'require' two openings in huts to feel good about escape from predators or combatants whilst resting, so always cut two openings, on opposite sides, so they have a back door.

BTW, from what I've seen (I've always had wyzecams on the huts), possums or raccoons only 'intrude' into a cat hut (in use) when there's food smell inside.
I found that out when one severe winter I started putting food inside the hut to keep it from freezing - both possums and racoons would rummage around in there, smelling FOOD. That led to some pretty spectacular clips of possums vs racoons, and racoons vs cats (cat usually just get the heck out of dodge).
A possum growling at a racoon is impressive, esp with those 'fangs' exposed. Most racoons will avoid them when they see that display (but return later when the 'coast is clear'.)

Leave food outside, and they only 'sniff' at the hut and it's contents.
(I also have foxes nearby - but for whatever reason they never come up the stairs to the upper deck where the huts are.)

A decently insulated hut only really needs added heat in extreme cold - and since it can get down to -20F here fairly regularly - I prefer to at least offer it.
(They never refuse, after all.) The one mentioned above seems to provide just the right amount of heat (even Tigger will leave for fresh air and sunshine on a sunny day) on cold nights -though he's usually out foraging all night.
The type of heating pads that are just ON, and feel hot to the touch, I think are a bad idea, not to mention the potential fire hazard.

@Neddy got be somewhat cautious letting out our pet cats or dogs , someone likes targeting , better hope none one of us catch them to handing them over to the police

as long as Little Boy okay should make a home where he feels really comfortable being around you ,

He was one of several (clearly related) ferals in the area; we mapped his route as ranging out to 2Km in a single day, so he moved around a lot, and very rapidly (always running). That path included crossing a bridge over a river (or over the ice in winter!) and running thru at least 3 different neighborhoods in two different 'cities' - all in a typical night...so the 'evil doer' with a bb gun could have been anywhere. Some bird watcher folks get really upset with cats who have a taste for them (most of mine are quite fond of chipmunks, though), or it could just as easily been a cowardly kid with a BB gun.

It took 4-5 of us, spread across those neighborhoods, feeding and offering him shelter, nearly two years to get him to the 'capture and adopt' stage.
After neutering, he was clearly relieved, and almost immediately started purring and nuzzling me, as if to say Thank You Thank You Thank You.
He has little or no interest in going back out there (one of my 'mates' has an ex-feral who is so scared of the outside he'll run FROM an open door!).
The one time he did end up outside (frightened by a service tech), he ran back around the house and back up on the 'old deck' right away, and came right back inside as soon as I opened the door.

He does love watching possums thru the glass door - I speculate that he got thru some of those harsh -20F winters by living with a possum family for warmth and cuddles. He'll hiss or yell at racoons, and tolerates most other feral visitors, but possums he just watches calmly eat their fill, and sometimes purrs!

Love the kitty, but that radiator housing really clobbers heating efficiency of the radiator, since it blocks convective radiation, the biggest mechanism for getting heat out of the radiator and into the room. Result is a higher heating bill.
It's the steam heat in my apartment building. It really doesn't need to provide any more heat, we barely have the valve cracked open. We removed 3 out of 6 radiators out altogether, the remaining ones are all closed or just opened slightly, and the apartment still runs hot.

But the cat loooves this one.
