This may seem a silly question but please indulge me.

On a fully balanced headphone amp, e.g. Topping A90, being fed a balanced signal from say a D90, would the output volume be louder using the balanced output or would the volume be the same as the 6.3mm single ended output?

I'm trying to understand if the gain levels are matched on the amp or if there would be a difference.

Thank you for you thoughts and please be gentle on my lack of knowledge.

Headphones on the balanced output will be 6dB louder than when plugged into the 6.3mm TRS in the A90.
Regardless of the input being SE or bal that difference on the outputs will always be there.

Gain thus depends on which output you choose.

low gain: -9.5dB for SE, -3.5dB for balanced (6dB louder)
medium gain: 0dB for SE, +6dB for balanced (6dB louder)
high gain: 9.5dB for SE, 15.5dB for balanced (6dB louder)
