I read that book 20 years ago, and I can tell you that ten minutes on The Rack would be a less severe punishment.
How Engineers are born
When it's a wood screw simply back it out, stick one or more toothpicks in the hole, add a dab of wood glue to the screw, and screw it back in being careful not over tighten it this time - or - just use a bigger, longer screw.
