Most of the Nak components of that era were indeed gorgeous. Good sounding, too.
The 600 components weren't even terrifyingly expensive (even for the era).

When anyone asks me what the allure is of vintage audio equipment I’m going send them this pic.

Sheesh - well that Nakamichi pic pretty much closed the thread...

I had to go to my spreadsheet (yeah I keep one for this purpose)... The $60 Altec Santana's we're a candidate (but I hated them and they barely lasted a month) so the more appropriate answer:

4jvzhy23q5881.jpg

Onkyo 2500 with a pair of Dynaco A25s both in perfect working (and decent looking) condition for $18. Still enjoyed daily, by my inlaws, some 15 years after I got em, and probably 50+ years since they were made.
(Not my pic - above - just illustrative)

PS BTW @mhardy6647 my CR3020 was ~$500 and just need some new lighbulbs (bargain?)

Very good to have, inlaws, parents and so on so we who like HiFi and have our own stuff can make HiFi bargains and place these with them. They will be happy and we think it's fun to fix it for them. Win win as they say.:D

It’s more blessed to give than receive (Acts 20:35)
Okay, I throw stones in glass houses because I have a lot of vintage stuff myself.:)

Yeah -- painfully -- a CR-3020 in almost any intact condition at $500 would have to be considered a bargain. A working one, absolutely and irrevocably. ;) How does it sound?

The TX-2500 is a pretty nice receiver. Onkyo "did" nice tuners. I had one for a while and might have it still were it not for the complete lack of silkscreening on the front panel! Someone had gotten over-aggressive in cleaning it. It was a freebie.
No A-25 freebies*, but I did find a nice pair of A-35s on the swap pile at the good ol' Harvard, MA town "dump" (actually, transfer station) many years ago. Still have those.

(the grilles are also in very nice condition, actually -- and remarkably)

CR3020 - I'm not all that fond of it. To be frank, I also have a Sansui G971 - and I enjoyed that one more. Yeah it was "tubby" - but - it's a 1970s monster receiver; I want it to be ostentatious; because why else have one?

The CR3020 is just a polite, albeit grgantuan, peice of kit (like most Yamahas, polite that is). It was relegated to bedroom duties (oooh... sounds sexier than I intended) for a while before being parked exclusively as eye-candy.

G971 - (spreadsheet says I spent ~$225 on it, many years ago) - lost a channel and has been parked as a display model

As an FYI - the bargain gear I actualy am using: F35s I paid ~$500 for and a WXA50 I found for $75 (not used together though)

Well...I'll admit I didn't take pics after I molested them. And it wasn't pretty, since they were then encased in PL Premium to de-Q them and suppress radiation from the body. I dragged several pairs off eBay for about $100, benefitting from all the online nonsense spouted about them. Here are some notable examples of unmolested ones:

DE250 511A Pic.jpg

Zich (RIP) testing his in his basement with a DE250 driver.

Altec Horns.jpg

A big version of my avatar. That's really a 511B; the A version was a paging horn that had no mounting holes on the flange.

They had a real datasheet, too!

altec_ad.jpg

No 511s here. Just Altec fan-boy trivia thrown in ;)

Huh, of course you should show pictures of them. Fits here in the thread.:D

Speaking of vintage. I have now exchanged various HiFi stuff, which my friend that also exchanged for miscellaneous. In the end (this crazy exchange round) I got my friend's TANNOY Mayfair T225 in this turn. That at a good price. A bargin, $180. That in Sweden is a bit below the market value of them. He had carried out a
re-cap on the crossover (only those capacitors cost a bit). Don't know if it was necessary but he likes to tinker with re cap operations. In and of itself, with speakers that are around 45 years old, it certainly can't hurt. He has knowledge required, good at soldering and so on so I trust him he did a good job.:)

TANNOY Mayfair T225 with 10 inch coaxial driver and passive radiator. It is possible to set as Tannoy calls it PRECENCE and TREBLE ENERGY. I am attaching some pictures of the speakers and crossover.

How do they sound.....yummy. :p. Surprisingly good actually. The coax driver is in good condition. Fun to try a coax speaker, I must say.:)

Looks good! Is it SEAS Excel the one with the magnesium cone we see in the pictures?

In that case, vintage and new in a mix. SEAS Excel can hardly be considered vintage. That's what I like, that is, mixing old and new.:D

Are these your "End Game Speakers"?:)

Those are W18E001s, the magnesium cone version with the higher Qts, in trapezoidal sealed cabinets. They get crossed at 110Hz to the woofer, and 773Hz to the horn, both LR4.

Yes, I guess they're my end game speakers. So far, I haven't itched for something better. I built them about 2011; and while the DSP settings have changed as I got better at crossovers etc,, the driver layout has remained like you see. Not so unique now that Genelec has the 8381A, but I put midranges around a horn before it was cool ;)

weirdly beautiful . . . and so ugly - at the same time
: = )
cheers
There's a 50s grade Z Sci-Fi movie that used the 511 as a Death Ray device prop. Wish I knew what movie that was!

Peace
Well -- and please don't read more into this than intended ;) -- I have always really, really loved the aesthetic of the A-401 amp. By far the most elegant entry level (which in those days, at 20 wpc, it was) component of its era. By far.
I don't have one :( ( ;) ), but (and, in the spirit of this thread!) I do have its bigger sibling, the A-402. Dump find, and (still) not re-habbed, but works "fine" and sounds good.

PS It is also very cool that you have a T-403! :) Another nice hk tuner, and, again, quite elegant in appearance, as well.
