Hey all,

I just joined today but have been a lurker for years. i was hoping someone could help me understand something with the Wiim Pro and volume. I use it as a streamer only and it's connected to an extrernal DAC then into an Amp. I stream from it using the ethernet connection and control it through the app on my Ipad Mini. I control the volume with my amp but I do see on the app for the Ipad there is a volume slider that does work and I usually have it turned all the way up so my questions are:

Does this cause any added noise or distortion to the chain?

Am I better off leaving the volume slider maybe a quarter of the way up?

I think some streamers defeat this feature, so maybe I'm missing a setting?

Thanks

Hi @Ronin22! Welcome aboard.

Noise and distortion stay the same, signal amplitude goes down.

Am I better off leaving the volume slider maybe a quarter of the way up?
The WiiM can output a full volume signal with perfect fidelity.

You can set your WiiM to fixed, 100% volume in the WiiM Home App settings, if you prefer that.

Thanks for the reply- a few questions

I'm not really sure I understanding how if I'm increasing the volume the signal amplitude will go down? wouldn't it go up?

So it sounds as though there is no issue with keeping the Ipad volume all the way up- How about in terms of the amp, full volume on the Wiim/Ipad allows me to turn down the amp volume but in general would it be better to use the volume on the amp to push headphone and get more current or volts or wats? Apologies as I'm not well versed in understanding these things

I don't see the option in the Wiim app to set it to fixed.

"Noise and distortion stay the same, signal amplitude goes down" was referring to the general usage of the WiiM's volume slider.

The WiiM's volume slider can only reduce the signal amplitude not boost it, so using the slider will inevitably result in a reduction in signal amplitude.

Not using the slider and keeping the WiiM at 100%, will preserve the signal amplitude at its native level.

Turning the WiiM down and the Amp up to compensate, will not get more current or volts or wats.

Loudness with any given headphone, is directly tied to the output voltage, current, and power of your Amp.

Same loudness -> Same output voltage, current, and power.

By turning down the WiiM, you will instead reduce the maximum possible output current/voltage/power of your Amp.
