Why there aren't pcm1794 dac anymore.

Why are they considered so special?

Discontinue anything with an avid following, legendary performance (for its time) and watch the demand (and price) skyrocket.

Simple economics.

The original Philips TDA-1541 S1 (and later the less desirable S2) is arguably the most valuable (if you can find an actual original) D/A in the world. Not the best, but the absolute best Philips could make in 1990. Then came Bitstream which was cheap crap. Then it was refined and displaced the 'king' of D/As.

The Burr Brown PCM-58P selection S (for Sony) is the best 18 bit converter they made. Until they made the PCM-63.

Hi.

On a FX AUDIO SQ5, try this, mesure this but don't forget to listen (LOL) ->

Don't part with your old DACs when they were good: even with these the MEASURABLE distortion rates were already below that of your best amplifiers and as for the modern formats used like DSD, I doubt very much that the INITIAL recording of the work you will listen to will be identical...
Indeed, with the 'plethora' of extrapolation and other filters used in modern DACs, one can wonder if they really preserve the message that the interpreter wanted to deliver?
I remember that before audiophiles who put forward the term 'a straight wire with only gain' used their equipment with all the correction settings 'at zero'.
What about today?

Regards.
