Just saw a trailer and promo pic for Angelina Jolie's Maria movie.

Being the HiFi nerd I am, I immediately saw a Pioneer SA-508 in the shot below:

The little 25wpc (FTC rated!) Pioneer SA-508 came to market in late 1979 and Maria Callas died two years before, September 16, 1977.

I remember that Pioneer and the series and they where wonderful devices. Dang if I had the foresight to know to buy up all those early amps!

Hilarious :) I immediately saw a pair of Thiel speakers in “ as good as it gets “ with Jack Nicholson , but I also saw that the speaker placement was “wrong” no card carrying ocd audiophile would place them like that.

It could also be an SA-5800 (her hair is covering the bottom right corner, and it looks like it has wooden cheeks), but that's the same era. Now I have to watch the movie to find out...

I knew none of that, though remember Pioneers of that vintage.

What do you think about the one in American Psycho? (the movie)

The Harmon Kardon gear. It's nice gear.
HK 725 preamp
HK 770 amplifier
HK EQ7 equalizer
HK 440xm cassette deck
and the Black CD player is a Pioneer PD-4300

The power amp gets no cooling with the EQ on top and he forgot to put some plastic in front of the hifi . He is about to axe murder someone :p

John, you're one of the most valuable (and appreciated) posters on this forum, but do you have any idea how weird you are?

They are doing the wrong speaker placement thing .

As the OP tread title suggests. Set designers know the cool look of vintage hifi , but not how it’s actually used or exact vintage in period movies :)
I think the set designers are a bit like the advertising companies that setup the old ad photos that drive people crazy too. They are just conveying a 'feeling' and setting the shot to look pretty.

Are period cars and period clothes in movies better ? I think soo , but I’m not nerdy enough to recognise 1958 hub caps on a 1957 Oldsmobile .

On topic , placement of cheap consumer hifi in a pile in a corner seems rigth people did that . But high end hifi is more carefully deployed by its users
