Hi ALL,

So i'm wanting to connect my topping Dx3 to my denon avr-s650h receiver, to use my headphones on my home theatre system.
How would i go about doing this? what cables do i need, and what is the setup process.

Thanks,

Chris.

What headphone do you currently have or plan on buying?
The Denon AVR-S650H receiver does not seem to come with any outputs, for connecting to the Topping DX3 Pro (+?).
Can you expand on your whole audio setup (what you have and what is connected to what)?

I currently have the Focal Clear headphones.
My audio setup is a basic front left and right speaker. All my streaming is done through my Nvidia Shield. I have a Toslink cable and also RCA cables.

How do the Focal Clear headphones sound plugged directly into the Denon 650?

They sound okay, but at higher volumes tend to crackle. Which i assumed could mean they are being underpowered.

The Denon's headphone jack should output more voltage than the 55-Ohm Focal Clear's would need.
More likely the headphone jacks high output impedance is not a good match, for 55-Ohm headphones.
Maybe it also a current issue?

What sources are connected to the Denon?

I have my NVIDIA Shield and Ps5 connected to the receiver, that is it.

Quick look at the manual says these are for subwoofers only. I think you're only option is to get some type of HDMI audio extractor box with a passthrough function. Take your HDMI out and send it to the box. From there you can tie into your DX3 pro using digital audio.

Amir reviewed one of these boxes and found it passed through very good digital audio (https://www.audiosciencereview.com/...-blackbird-review-hdmi-audio-extractor.36478/)

Yeah, an HDMI audio extractor may in fact be the best choice here. The Topping doesn't have an analog input that one could have used to make the headphone output work with the right cable.

BTW, aren't Focal Clears a bit notorious for this driver crackling / bottoming out? I would estimate the Denon to be able to output about 2.5 Vrms into these undistorted, which should be plenty given that they are rated 104 dB/1 mW (117 dB/1 V). I mean, it's still a pretty shit output due to its astronomic output impedance (and the Focals have major impedance deviation which should result in a substantial bass boost, clearly not helping matters in the crackle department), but still.

Sorry for the silly question, so how would the HDMI audio extractor be setup. Where do the HDMI cables connect to and also digital audio.
Does the HDMI out go to the receiver and digital audio from DX3 to receiver.

You currently have a HDMI going from the HDMI out on your receiver to your TV. This cable would now go into the HDMI audio extractor. You'll need another HDMI cable to go from the extractor to your TV. A separate spdif cable (probably optical) would go from the extractor to your Topping DX3.
