Inclusion of balance control a major plus for those wanting to drive a power amp direct from the DAC - I’d like to see more details.

Even for those with the Topping PRE90 preamp which doesn’t have a balance control.

It has three different sound modes: Hifi mode (Sound mode off), Valve mode (simulates the sound of tube), and transistor sound (simulates the sound of the field-effect transistor). Besides, it is able to adjust the sound balance of left and right channel, 0.5 dB per step within a 10 dB range.

And I'm sitting here still waiting for a TOTL combo unit...

Here's how the sound simulation modes corrupt the sound with varying amounts of 2nd and 3rd harmonic distortion.

hI, is a PRE90 still useful and in what cases compared to using this apparently new integrated DAC + PRE ? Best.

If you’ve got other analog inputs the PRE90, or equivalent, is necessary. In principle the combo of dac plus separate analog preamp could give a marginally better signal to noise ratio, but with a DAC like the D90 series it would be hard to discern except with careful measurement. The one advantage the D90LE has is a balance control which sadly the PRE90 lacks. Having said that I can‘t remember when I last adjusted the balance away from the central position.
