Im thinking about building a set of speakers. Im a fairly experienced woodworker and I completely get why it makes sense to use mdf or marine ply to make boxes of a uniform density, but couldn't I shell those boxes in 1/4 or 1/2 solid wood and avoid the whole veneer issue? Especially if I make the front baffle double thick and make sure my interior cabinet volume is correct there shouldn't be an issue with cladding mdf boxes in solid wood right?

I'm just trying to think about how to make modern speaker enclosures without having to worry about paint finish quality or veneer quality. This seems like a reasonable solution.

That should work just fine. Just make sure the baffle shape remains the same as well as the internal volume.
