Small bookshelf speakers in cabinet

it'd be better to raise them to the top of this opening in the cabinet, so less sound is blocked by the coffee table or couch.
Yes!
Even better - put it on sturdy pedestal stands so that the woofer is at the height of about 3 feet. There is enough space left and right of the TV panel.

I think that's a bit of an overly strong statement on the situation. The speakers can easily be moved up a little and tilted up, particularly a small speaker like the KEF LSX. Throw a rug on the floor to attenuate the floor bounce in the higher frequencies and it should be perfectly fine. Not ideal, of course, but far from a situation where better equipment won't help..
This isn’t criticism at all. This setup’s biggest opportunities aren’t different speakers or different gear. They are not the limiting factor. Attention to the setup/room/furniture is what can provide an actual, significant improvement.

The components of this system are good. With some upgrades to to the room and positioning, it will reach the next level.

Oh, and a subwoofer. real bass is great!

You aren't exactly wrong, but I think maybe you didn't read the first post? The OP specifically stated they have another setup for their more serious listening, and this is a casual setup and wants to know what they can do with the space as it is. Suggesting making big changes to the furniture and space is kind of missing the point it seems to me.

Yes unfortunately that's not going to happen. I could perhaps fit a stand on the left, but on the right there is a door basically right where the tv ends. It wouldn't be able to open if I put a stand there, I'd have to keep moving it, and risk knocking it down etc. And I don't want to put anything on the wall either as I'm renting and not sure how long I'll stay here.
