Remote control issues when watching TV through audio system

I decided to try to hook up my system today to be able to listen to the audio from my TV(and old Panasonic HDTV) through my speakers. I stream using a Roku, and use it's remote to control TV volume when listening through the TV speakers. Today I connected an optical cable from my HDMI switch box to my DAC, and am using my preamps remote to control the audio volume. But when I attempt to increase volume incrementally I'm unable to , and the volume just gets loud very quickly without being able to be controlled.

Any thoughts on what might be going on here and how this problem can be remedied? Thanks.

What DAC and what preamp? Sounds like your DAC is a little hotter than your preamp ideally wants to see.

Can you reduce output on the DAC, reducing voltage going to the pre?

DAC is SMSL SU-9 and preamp is McIntosh CR-7. The DAC is fine when listening to music. It’s only when connecting the TV via optical connection from an HDMI switch box that tv(HDMI out) and Roku (HDMI in) are connected to the DAC, which is connected to the Mc pre, where the problem is. Using the Mc’s remote l, if I attempt to increase the volume on TV audio it ignores the incremental increase(or decrease) and quickly moves to the maximum level.

I normally control tv volume through its internal speakers with the Roku remote.

It’s likely IR interference. I tried blocking the IR sensor on the TV but that didn’t work. I can’t block the IR sensor on the Roku because I need to be able to control it for other functions .
