Unintentionally coinciding with Armistice/Veterans/Remembrance Day, I've been watching Spielberg's "The Pacific". Just want to give a big thank you to those who defend us.

Has anyone mentioned The Pale Blue Eye?
It is a period drama about 'Who dun it!'.
Harry Melling (of Harry Potter fame) is exceptional here, Christian Bale is always. Indeed, acting, story telling and direction are all first-rate.
Ignore IMDB rating score, SpiderMan can hit 8 on IMDB.

Seriously?
You are recommending these film to watch?
Though must admit, Aubrey Plaza is deviously sexy.

I consider 'refreshing' to be 'fun' with interesting characters and a bit of a unique take on an old story.
Sure, they aren't slow and artsy but, Safety Not Guaranteed has a 91% on rotten tomatoes and FAQ about Time Travel has a 7/10 on IMDB and Chris O'Dowd.

A positive vote for Safety not Guaranteed. Very decent.
Aubrey Plaza is also in Damsels in Distress, which I really like.
Massive disclaimer on this one, though: I would not blame people for thinking it was really bad.
The sense of humor is very specific. The director is Whit Stillman, if that gives a clue.

Sticking my chin way out on this one. Had trouble with the first "bollywood" styled15 minutes, hoping that wouldn't be the whole thing. But after that, what a hoot and adult look at how women and girls have been treated since WWII. A true technicolor farce worth all the hype. Its got to have a dozen Kens and fifty Barbies. Debuts the the new Chevy Blazer EV for you car guys and nice looking Barbies too (had to get macho stuff in there).

I wanted to like this one. Generally a fan of Greta Gerwig.
I find that it stays too conceptual and schematic to really work.
YMMV of course, still a good movie, not as good as Little Women of Ladybird.

Gerwig is one of the very best actresses of her generation.

Dropping this video she was in for an Arcade Fire song.
I know it doesn't go with the "movies" part of this thread, but I hope it goes with "refreshing":

I have hopes of The Boy and the Heron, which makes it's USA debut on the 8th of December.

Update 12/15: I watched it on the big screen this afternoon - great! Because it's an animated feature with a schoolboy as protagonist, you might think this movie would be best for kids and adolescents, but adult-type viewers need not fear: If anything, it's a good deal more complex than your average superhero movie.

American_Gangster_poster.jpg

Two 2007 films.

No Country for Old Men was super tense and atmospheric. Almost no music is in it but it didn't need it. I'm glad I finally watched it.

American Gangster was also great.

BlacKkKlansman.png

2018 film.

Not my usual genre necessarily but Black**lansman was surprisingly good, from memory.
