Hi,

I've just bought a new speaker set: 2x Polk R500, 2x R100 & R300.
The room is 32m2 - 344sq ft.

My current AVR is a Sony STR-DN1050 from 2014.
I'm missing out on 4K 120hz, HDR10(+)/Dolby Vision and it's one of the main reasons I want to upgrade (that and I play XBOX Series X).

The Polks R500 are rated at:
  • Amplifier Output Compatibility8Ω / 6Ω / 4Ω
  • Minimum Impedance (ohms)3.9Ω
  • Sensitivity (2.83V/1m)87dB
I'm looking for a good AVR that can last me another 5-10 years.
The plan is perhaps add 2 Atmos Polk R900 extension speakers and 1 sub (SVS PB-2000 PRO).

Things I will never need:
  • 2 subs
  • more than 9.x channels (5.1.2 seems to be my end-game in my current house)
  • Dirac live
  • Phono
  • Composite / component
Things I really want:
  • minimum 6 HDMI 2.1 4k 120hz inputs
  • At least 1 HDMI 2.1 4k 120hz output (8k 60hz nice to have for the future but not a hard requirement)
  • DV & HDR10(+) support
  • Apple airplay 2 streaming support
  • Spotify connect (nice to have)
  • An AVR with a good chip without any audio/video drops/glitches/communication problems between components.

I was looking through the reviews and posts but it's a bit difficult choosing the right AVR.

I've looked at the following AVRs:
  • Marantz Cinema 40
  • Denon AVR-X3800H
  • Denon AVR-X4700H
  • Sony TA-AN1000
I've read stuff about the chipsets on the Denons, limitations of the 4700, buggy software by Sony (and terrible support - they dropped Mobile App support after only 2,5 years for my AVR), etc.
I don't really need Dirac - Audyssey MultEQ XT32 will be more than enough (difference between dirac live is not justifiable).

My max budget would be around €1300 / $1400.

Your advice/input is greatly appreciated.
I used to follow the AVR space closely but I've been out of it for a while now.

Consider waiting for a sale price on the Denon AVR-X3800H. I don't think I would hear the differences measured by ASR between a Denon '4700' and a Denon '3800'. The Denon 3800 gives you the option of adding Dirac Live - IF you change your mind.

X3800H, Cinema 40, or Cinema 50. Those all have a full set of 40 Gbps HDMI 2.1 ports. The older generation (4700) only has a single HDMI 2.1 port. Additionally, the Sony AVRs do not have full bandwidth across all ports -- some of them are 24 Gbps down to 18 Gbps.

What would the actual benefit for adding Dirac Live?

I understood that the Denon and Marantz are from the same factory, is that correct?
So the difference would be minimal between them except for maybe a specific vendor feature here and there?

My use case is 60% Movies/TV Shows and 10% Streaming (news, some select shows) and 30% gaming.

I perceive more 'clarity' using Dirac Live than Audessey. It is my impression that Denon AVRs have a lower list price than Marantz AVRs with similar features.
