JBL 305P MkII Review (Erin)

I want people to understand there is more out there than chamber music to listen to speakers with.
Honestly, I consider this a damn near mandatory thing. The "audiophile music" market is not indicative of actual listening habits for most people - I'm going to be listening to Leprous and VOLA long before I spend any time on Diana Krall, because that's the music I like.
 
I've got a library full of MFSL and AF remasters. Not the crap stuff. And I linked the Spotify list because those are the songs I use; not necessarily the exact same masters. I want people to understand there is more out there than chamber music to listen to speakers with. I have even purchased many original 80's masters from different countries of origin in hopes to find the "best" pressing. Not that it's ever really been necessary.
Well then im glad to see a fellow hoarder of og masters

I often read reviews here and other places across the internet. I am also aware that people may on occasion display bias for whatever reasons - this isn't limited to any one person but is a general trait of all humans. I have never posted until today, so this will be my first.

My only question regarding this review is: Why were the initial measurements taken at 0.3V when the norm is 2.83V, as was the case for competitor speakers like the HS5? Is this a clear comparison with the competition?

I have not listened to this JBL model, but I have listened to other 5-inch monitors including higher end models like KH80 DSP that my autistic son's music therapist (an accomplished muso who plays upwards of 20 instruments) brought around to test an interface for me.

I have HS5 for my son and have run the data on them. I am about to change out the OEM mid-bass for either the SB15NBAC30-4 or the SBCRC30-4. In my simulations this should go a long way to taming the peak at around 1khz and lift the dip seen at the crossover point of 2khz. At the same time adding several db in bass response from 110hz down to the fb of around 54hz - the Yamaha limiter circuit takes over around 50hz. If you "dig" the bass hump like Erin with the philharmonics, you could change out for the SB15CAC30-4. If you like more warmth, then go the paper driver SB15NRX2C30-4

For us Australians that can buy the HS5 for $448 AUD per pair with free delivery pretty much any day of the week, then add two sb drivers for another $200 AUD it should provide what you want from a direct drop-in replacement. If you have a sub you could cross at about 80 to 100hz and take advantage of the unmatched mid-range for the money) that SB Acoustics drivers deliver.

The Yamaha are very easy to work on, with no fancy integrated single board design (3 separate boards in theirs). You want more power change to the HS8 amp board as the HS utilize the same board across the range, only really varying the voltage from about 30v to 38v, and capacitors - 50v 4700uf from memory in the HS8.

Just food for thought from a noob.

Active speakers are fed line level signals, not speaker level. The amps are inside the box.

2.83V is something like +11dBu, that's quite a hot signal.

0.3V is closer to typical consumer line level for 0VU, which is -10dBV.
 
Does anybody know what exactly are the adjustments that the High shelf Knob does on the back of the 305p?

Reason i'm asking is that i'm wondering if the shelf would pull the midrange Bump (1.7KHz) down too along side the rest of the treble

The manual states:
HIGH FREQUENCY TRIM SWITCH – This switch allows boost or attenuation of high frequency output by 2dB. Select the setting that provides the desired high frequency response for the application

and

HF Trim Control: HF Shelf @ 4.4kHz: +2dB, 0dB, -2dB

This is the treble and bass switch setting effect for the Massdrop LSR30X, their version of the JBL 305P, courtesy SBAF. The OG 305P Mark II should behave basically the same, IMO.
