So the 2nd track presented here isn't jazz, but Mick Karn (RIP) - fretless bass, talks about his jazz influence.

Former member of Japan (widely misunderstood why they went Kabuki in full personal life with period modern makeup to see what it would bring to the music, rather than try to fake it like some of their other former glam-rock influences...)

A later track by Mick Karn, which he invited his boyhood bandmate / chum David Sylvian to do vocals on, which under the right conditions, his fretless bass might make you cry. Just a head's up.

Man, still amazing to listen to. On some of the notes, it almost sound like the cartridge trying to jump the groove.

Fans of post-bop modal jazz should check these guys out. They put out five albums together and they are all wonderful. Nothing too crazy, just nice grooves and swing. Decca just issued a remastered set of all five and they sound amazing. Very much not to be missed.

April 4 is the birthday of Jimmy Greene's late daughter Ana, who was a victim of the Sandy Hook school shooter.

This one's been getting a lot of attention from me lately. Great soul jazz guitar from Phil Upchurch. There's a lot of mediocre soul jazz out there, but this one is really good quality above that. I think it's in part due to the blues elements he likes to work with. He got a great touch and nice sense of melody and timing. It's about 50/50 originals and covers. Even the covers get really nice arrangements here. It's laid back enough to go on in the background, but you'll find yourself drawn in by the wonderful musicianship. The new CD pressing sounds great.
