It's the Wrong headphone Gromit!

Initially stymied by an inability to connect the phone usb c - usb c to my desktop, I then remembered the Amazon tablet. All images and videos pretty much instantly seen by the tablet. What a result. I have just returned the perfectly innocent Ugreen device back to Amazon. As always, thank you all for your input. :)

Interesting, just had a look at this problem from the other end. Truthear and Moondrop websites do indeed sell dongles which could solve the problem.
Would either work with the others products? How much to invest?
More things for me to consider. As an aside, Tom, up at the Post Office was positively anti Amazon, but did reluctantly agree to return the Ugreen device after I complimented him on the classically trained female vocalist from Nightwish, who he was playing, if only to my delight!!!!

I have tried all afternoon to play music on the Amazon Tablet. Using a usb c to usb c cable. Then via Bluetooth. No luck.
My son has recently bought a refurbed s23 Ultra. He has just told me he has never tried wired earphones.

Okay, my favourite hifi shop Unilet, David specifically, is quite keen to sell me an Audioquest Dragonfly which he reckons would do the trick. A bit pricy, and he did initially say I should try a phone shop. That sounds sensible, as I would be able to try any allegedly working option in the shop.
I did think last night that I am just cursed. Admittedly in a dim living room, I tried to take a picture on Zoom, of a lamp. Wouldn't focus, blurred image!!!!!
Faffed about this morning, and now it seems fine.

Just for your information, there also seem to be problems with the Audioquest Dragonfly on the S24.
In general, a lot of problems are reported with the Samsung S24 Ultra and 3.5mm audio.
The description of the problems is similar, often it worked at first and then stopped. There also seem to have been fewer problems with the first devices, but when the devices were replaced with newer models after a defect, the 3.5mm audio no longer worked.
The same problems are also known with the S24 Ultra with various desktop DACs, both expensive and cheap.

In some places it is described that it can work if music playback is started and then the USB-C adapter is plugged into the S24.

As the problems occurred for many people regardless of software updates, it could actually be a massive hardware problem. It's sad that Samsung is once again sitting it out without offering buyers a solution.

That sounds like even if you buy something it's not guaranteed to keep working flawlessly. A Bluetooth adapter like the Qudelix 5K might be the best way forward.

I can recommend the Qudelix 5K from personal experience, especially because of EQ.

Samsung has undergone some changes in the last 10 years, which has led to very customer-unfriendly behavior and technical problems are often left to the customer to deal with instead of being solved. Unfortunately, more and more large manufacturers are also going down this path.
My devices are from a different manufacturer and I am very happy that such problems are taken more seriously. As a former IT specialist in high-availability IT and hardware expert, I really appreciate this.

Quedelix certainly is far cheaper than the Dragonfly options. Cheaper again appears to be the Moondrop equivalent device The Dawn Pro.
I do note that Moondrop also appears to sell quite cheaply iem's with a USB connection. I think I'll just be patient. As always, you guys absolutely brilliant!:D

The dongles, USB headphones and most of the desktop DACs follow the UAC1 and/or UAC2 interface specs for USB. There's no reason to expect the Dragonfly or Moondrop USB IEMs to work when the Apple and UGreen didn't. From what @Roland38 says it seems to be a Samsung problem not a DAC problem. They probably think everyone should be buying their bluetooth IEMs instead of using wires.

I still very much doubt that Samsung phones have some issues supporting USB class-compliant hardware. In my own experience, based on long-term use of first the Galaxy S10 and now the S23 Ultra, there is no problems at all. I tried to connect various audio devices, and everything worked flawlessly, starting with the Apple dongle and including the Qudelix 5K, Shanling M3s DAP, audio interfaces like the RME ADI-2 Pro, Zoom UAC-2, the Yamaha MG10XU mixing console, USB microphones like Shure MV88+, Rode Wireless Pro, Rode NT1 5th Gen, Zoom H1n handheld recorder (in USB interface mode).

Generally, I don't have any problems connecting any class-compliant USB devices (not only audio, but also storage, input devices, etc.) I even used my S10 in DeX mode for a couple of months when I was left without a computer (having it connected to a USB-C monitor with built-in USB hub and network adapter).

So I suspect some kind of a user error is at play here rather than a conspiracy on Samsung's part.

Nice comments unplugged.
I could certainly be doing something wrong.
Any tips with regards to the settings on my s24 Ultra which I should check out?

The MOONDROP DAWN Pro is also just a USB dongle without Bluetooth.

The Qudelix 5K is something completely different because you can save EQ setups for multiple headphones, hence the higher price.

With most headphones, especially IEMs, you only hear what the headphones can do once you have applied EQ to them. You can spend 300 or 500 €/$ on an IEM and still won't get what a 25 - 50 €/$ IEM with a Qudelix 5K and EQ does.

I used to spend 300 - 1000 €/$ on IEMs, luckily I sold them again in time.

Thanks Roland
Truthfully, I have been content with the Moondrop Chu and the Zero:2 via the One plus 5, straight out of the box. Eighty old ears, and all that.

Have you sent all the dongles back? If not- plug any you have left that havent worked on the S24 into the OP5 (Thats USB C isnt it? )

What happens there ? OP devices used to need to set USB to OTG in settings somewhere but maybe ditched that by the 5.

Thanks Roland

I used to think that too and was of the opinion that they should be right out of the box, but that's hardly technically possible.
The 7Hz x Crinacle Zero:2 in particular benefits from the EQ, as does the Chu, TRUTHEAR x Crinacle ZERO:RED or ZERO, etc. Real waste without EQ.
