Hey ASR community!

I’ve been a fan of @amirm’s content for years and always appreciate the effort that goes into it - thanks for all you do, Amir!

Since I mostly get my news from Twitter, I’ve been wishing for a way to see new review posts directly in my timeline. So, I decided to make it happen! Using my experience with Twitter bots and web scraping, I built a bot that automatically posts new reviews.

You can check it out here: https://x.com/AuScRe_Bot

If @amirm has any concerns about a third party doing this, I’m happy to take it down right away - no hard feelings at all.

Hope you all have a great day!

I actually, and in full disclosure, abhor and eschew social media (other than... umm... audio forums, which tend to select for the antisocial, anyway ;)), so, other than what I read and hear about X, it's all noise to me.
Maybe the bot is very cool, but maybe not for X?
Sorry that I was as glib as I have been so far in this thread.

Cool effort, I am sure the intersection of X and ASR users will appreciate it. To be more on-trend in terms of social platform growth, as others have alluded to, maybe a follow-up Bluesky bot would make sense too. :)

I'm sort of surprised that they didn't remove the API's needed to create such an app. After they shut down TweetBot and a host of other apps I thought it was curtains for anyone trying to programmatically work with Twitter. As a tech instructor at NYU I applaud any hobbyist working with code for fun and learning and second the Bluesky bot suggestion.

Bluesky bot
I haven't switched yet, because I'd lose some people's posts and I couldn't live without TweetDeck (now OldTweetDeck), but I'll make it happen! Shouldn't be much work.

They crippled the API. The free one has been write-only for a while and they only recently limited the amount of tweets per month from 1500 to 500, which makes hourly posting with it impossible. That's relevant for me, because I have a lot of lyrics bots and also host other people's bots.
But, the thing is, you don't have to use that. It's certainly the easiest way to interact with it, but not the only.
Twitter uses an extra API for their front-end, which can be reverse engineered, which people have done before. That's quite risky though, because they could change something on the server side and then easily identify the people who use their front-end's API, even though they're not supposed to.
For a last resort you could always automate a browser. Like say with code to open Chrome in a specific mode, navigate to a website, type some text and click on a button. That's what I've been doing with my lyrics bots since they limited the amount of tweets per month, because it's easy and safe (they can't really do anything about that).
For AuScRe_Bot I use the API because it's the easiest, most reliable and we're far away from 500 reviews per month.

Make a Bluesky version and I'll follow it.

As opposed to just clicking on the very prominent "Reviews" menu item?
I usually don't spend time in the forum, but I want to read new reviews. I have all my news on Twitter (I treat the reviews here as news). That way I don't have to manually check 10 news channels, but can just scroll on Twitter. There's a reason why basically every news channel also posts their news on sites like Twitter.

I don't get it (and speaking personally, if someone created a bot scraping my posts onto twitter without my permission, I'd find it pretty creepy)
I mean, it's not like I post someone's personal stuff. Those are reviews that are meant to be read by as many people as possible.
As mentioned in my initial post, if Amir wants it gone, he can DM me and it's gone as soon as I have access to a computer.

I guess I'm ol' fashioned but surely the polite thing would have been for you to have DM'ed him first to get his permission rather than assuming it

The posts link back to ASR so I don't see a problem. All the OP is doing is aggregating the posts here on ASR.

This is no different to 'pingbacks' on a WordPress site IMHO.

Of course @amirm might have a different view - but ultimately this should drive traffic to the site which is no bad thing surely?
