I just now listened to a very nice, acapella nine-voice version of Gregorio Allegri's Miserere performed by A Sei Voci.

I regularly listen to Beethoven string quartets, especially the late quarters. I have to say the Takács Quartet version is probably the one I listen to most often.

I'm also fond of Shostakovich' string quartets. In his case I probably favor the Emerson Quarter version.

I tried Tidal recently and, as a mainly Classical fan, found it rather wanting, especially after all the effusive praise.

For example, 'Composer' is conflated with 'Artist', that is, if you want to search for a composer's works or recordings you have to search 'Artist'. I did that for 'Shostakovich', (him being a favorite composer of mine though not everybody's cup of tea). I got back a scattering of "songs" and albums. Asking for all Shostakovich's I got a rather short list including multi-composer albums and a remarkable number of albums with "Shostakovich performs Shostakovich" -- not that Shostakovich was a remarkable performer or conductor: he wasn't.

... I deem this treatment of Classical music to be worthless.

I don't buy Tidal, I don't use Tidal, I dont subscribe to Tidal, I don't support Tidal.
It's what it is.

A friend is a judge of the Superior Court in Canada, and last time he was subscribing to Tidal but he's not a classical hardcore music lover. Different music sessions for different music lovers and ultra high end audiophiles. That's why I love this world...for the diversification and versatility in music, and the free choice and expression.

Right in the now ...

Feel free to explore him...he is very highly worth it. ...Supreme highly classic violinist master. Music you can die very secured after you ingest.

Stumbled across this gem on YT today.
Really like it. I believe it should qualify, yes?

I always loved Beethoven.

If you are still interested in a streaming service, as someone who listens to a fairly broad range of classical, I suggest giving Qobuz a try.

I agree that Tidal is quite poor for classical. Qobuz is better, and of course it has the advantage of being completely MQA-free.

Qobuz definitely has metadata problems -- I don't want to downplay that. But they are less severe than Tidal's where the classical library is concerned.

Services like Idagio and Primephonic purport to have solved the metadata issues by carefully 'curating' their classical-specific library. But my experience with them is that their libraries are considerably smaller than what Qobuz or Amazon HD offer. Still, that was a while ago -- well over a year, so perhaps they have expanded their offerings. But I'd be surprised if they rival what the bigger services offer.

No matter where we get our Classical music vaccine, no matter the dose, the format, it's Classical music we love and share ... analog and digital, objective and subjective, war @ peace ...

In this exact moment right now, this album ...

The recording quality is just fine, the violin is right there, and the artist inside his instrument. ... The musician in his element and the music that emanates from him and from his instrument, all is like . . . Skating Music transporting the human soul on a higher floating device above the surface of the water, without touching it but spiralling above it, in spirals that suit just fine the moment in time and in space. Your mileage might vary, I'm only describing from my end...there's nothing else I can do about it, like the wind blowing.

Rachmaninoff: Piano Concerto No. 2
Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra / Stanislaw Wislocki / Sviatoslav Richter 1959

One of the best and my personal favorite version (this and Previn).
The recording is as good as it could probably be...

Ben Verdery is my favorite classical guitarist (probably!).
Bach’s Chaconne, from the second violin partita. Verdery recorded his transcription of this in an album called Branches; many years later he recorded a new interpretation for this video project:

New to the forum and this conversation, but I thought I’d add that Roon helps with classical music indexing on Tidal and Qobuz by adding an additional layer for “Works” that is smarter than track listings or album titles. Not perfect, but very helpful, especially culling through the myriad of reissues if certain recordings.

I found a violinist, Michael Rabin, to whom I have been listening for the last few days. Sad that he died so young!

He ranks at the top of my list now. Please give him a listen and tell me what you think.
