I found a violinist, Michael Rabin, to whom I have been listening for the last few days. Sad that he died so young!

He ranks at the top of my list now. Please give him a listen and tell me what you think.
I think he’s a legend! Short career , short life, leaves is wondering where he might have gone in terms of repertoire.

Listened his Wienawski Violin Concerto No. 2 on EMI. Wienawski was one of those Romantic Era violin virtuosos who wrote his own music with which to wow audiences. The sort of music I'd put on and not pay much attention to. But Rabin had me entranced throughout.

I just now listened to a very nice, acapella nine-voice version of Gregorio Allegri's Miserere performed by A Sei Voci.

I regularly listen to Beethoven string quartets, especially the late quarters. I have to say the Takács Quartet version is probably the one I listen to most often.

I'm also fond of Shostakovich' string quartets. In his case I probably favor the Emerson Quarter version.

An opinion: Shostakovich string quartets show similarity of material to his symphonies, at least in comparison with the Beethoven string quartets which much less are reflected in Beethoven's symphonies.

I like Classical music to the near exclusion of other genre. But everyone should be aware the Classical consists of many subgenres. Personally my favorite subgenre is probably 20th century music, both orchestral and chamber, (see Shostakovich, et al.).

Another subgenre I occasionally indulge in is (broadly) Contemporary. And one of my favorite composers in this genre is Elliott Carter. For example I'm fond of Carter's orchestral work, Symphonia "Sum fluxae pretium spei" ...

Gidon Kremer is my favourite violinist. He has recorded huge variety of music, but I admire his rhythmically complex records like

Kate Royal: A Lesson in Love The album has been out for a decade or so -- it's a lovely recital of lieder chosen to tell the story of a young woman's first love. If you enjoy lieder at all, the first selection on the album, William Bolcom's "Waitin," should pretty much have you hooked. Here's a preview:
