Børresen M1

I'm currently deploying these speakers which use Faital Pro 8 inch mids:
hi really great project indeed Nice
Not sure how big you want to go; they are large but to my mind the obvious sacrifice to make with Hoffman's Iron Law is the 'Small size'. :)
this is my reference model for look Of course the parts can vary

a 3 ways with the woofer in a separate cabinet The beasts must be kept in cages Seriously the control of woofer vibrations is for me by far the biggest challenge I do no like the woofers on the sides back to back Just one big one on the front firing directly towards the listening spot
I also very much like the JBL L166 so maybe we have similar tastes/expectations?
it could be I like clean powerful sound
looking at the L166 crossover points has changed my approach Actually the drums are just in the midrange
It could be that with some music the SPL peaks in the midrange could be very high in level Better to use a powerful driver ?
i use tracks like this one for testing

With no constraint on size the sky's the limit.

I am very much a fan of using three or more ways in large cabs, but then I'm old and that's how it was done back in my formative years.

Now it's all small speakers and multiple subs to do the same thing - some would argue they do it better. I won't disagree but 'better' is subjective to some extent.

Using a large mid with high power handling makes sense, until you run into issues with narrowing dispersion. Even with no constraints there's still trade-offs to be made. Knowing your own preferences well is invaluable when deciding what to prioritise and what to sacrifice.

the only large cab will be for the woofer that could work also as stand I do not like wide baffles The needed volume could be obtained with more depth
but again the woofer cabinet will make or break the sound It is a challenge Many good speakers have so so cabinets proned to resonate
The best cabinet is not a no cabinet like open baffle fans say It is a properly designed and built cabinet

subs complicate the system too much I do not like them

i see Again is an issue to find the best crossing point between woofer and midrange The most important design decision
still undecided I am studying

this is my idea of true full-range sound on the (relative) cheap:

oris 150 horns, presently utilizing tang band w8-1772 drivers, (supposedly over-achievers compared to the spendy stuff). they do sound good. the horns are sitting on heavily modified klipsch lascala bass bins w/beefed up cabinetry and 15" fostex pro-audio drivers. now on the inside of the bass bins and horns, (moved this past saturday), are vmps larger subs. peaking out from above the horns are a pair of beryllium ribbon tweeters sitting on stands, salvaged from a mid-'80's pair of pioneer s-1010 speakers. and there's also a pair of lowboy style vmps larger subs in the back of the room. active 24db/octave x-overs at 60hz, 175hz and 7khz separate the amps driving the respective drivers. and there's a 2nd pair of the 2nd gen vmps larger subs in the back of the room, ~20' behind the listening area. (it's a large space, and the added low end helps balance out the sound in the room.)

an update is on its way: adapters for the oris horns, which will allow the use of bms coax 4590 compression drivers. oris' owner/designer says these are superior in this configuration to even very expensive full-range drivers from lowther, aer, voxativ, etc. it's what he's using in his own personal system. i will likely change the x-over point between the bass bin and the compression driver from 175hz to 250-300hz, and ditch the ribbon tweeter and actively cross the compression driver at ~6300hz, as that's the recommended x-over point.
