Hey, I bought a demo pair of Edifier Airpulse A100 speakers, my current set is the Edifier s880db with 2 stereo connected Edifier T5 subwoofers, which make them basically two 3way speakers.
Now I'm comparing the two speakers and on the Airpulse A100 I just miss the audio presets (vocal, dynamic, classic and monitor) that the s880db offers, I mainly have the s880db on the classic preset which makes the sound more 3d, enhances vocals and makes is more dynamic overall.
The sound quality of the A100 is very good, punchy bass and handles higher volumes much better than the s880db (the sound of the s880db is really nice too, they are hardly different (the s880db on monitor preset) at lower volumes except for the bass). Unfortunately the sound of the Airpulse A100 can't be tailored like on the s880db, turning the treble and bass knobs on the back doesn't really change the flat sound they produce. I'm not an audiophile I just listen for fun and I actually like the consumer style presets and don't really prefer flat/monitor speaker sound.
What can I do to make the sound more dynamic? I have the Airpulse A100 connected to a Sony TV via an optical cable, if I only listened to them on a PC I would use equalizer software. The Airpulse A100 has no balanced input so an external DAC seems less useful? Or can an external DAC (suggestions?) connected to the RCA aux input make a positive difference? (it still gets processed by the internal dac though)
Thanks for the input, I'm just trying to make my mind up as I still can return the speakers.
